October's edition is here! This time, Foodprint in Focus covers: ✅ How to set science-based emission reduction targets with Biocode, aligned with SBTi’s FLAG guidance. ✅ How agricultural emissions compare to transportation in product carbon footprints, and why this matters in the context of locally produced vs. imported food. ✅ What ESRS E1 is and its benefits for companies. Happy reading!

True or false: Choosing locally produced food is more climate-friendly than imported food? This is tricky, but the answer is: 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘦. 👀 Why? While local food can reduce transportation-related emissions (often referred to as "food miles"), transportation typically contributes less than 10% of a food product’s total carbon footprint. Other factors, such as: ✔️ raw materials ✔️ energy use ✔️ fertilizer use ✔️ and land use emissions can have a much larger impact on overall emissions than the distance the food has traveled. For instance, importing food that is grown more efficiently in terms of resources like water or energy may have a lower overall carbon footprint than locally produced food. Thus, it depends on the specific food, production practices, and transportation methods involved.

Joonas has done an amazing work with our new, upcoming UI 🥳 I mean, look at those designs 💯
I finally wrote a fully-fledged case study of the Biocode project I’ve been working on. Have a look: https://lnkd.in/dPzSWRgs I shipped it a year after the initial release, and it’s still not perfect — nor does it need to be. If you're building your own portfolio, I recommend not overdoing the first version so you can ship it faster. You can always iterate and add more content later when you have time.

❓ True or False❓ “If a product is labeled Carbon Neutral, it’s good for the climate.” The "Carbon Neutral" label suggests environmental responsibility, but it doesn’t tell us the whole story. It means the product’s emissions have been calculated and offset, but it doesn’t reveal the size of the carbon footprint. A product could still have a significant impact, even with this label. The real question is: how was neutrality achieved? Was it through meaningful emission reductions or just offsetting? And if by offsetting, how exactly? 🧐 ➡ So, is a carbon-neutral product truly good for the climate? 𝗜𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀. Let us know what you think! 💬👇 #Offsetting #CarbonNeutral #Climate #Biocode

What You Need to Know About ESRS E1 🌍 ESRS (European Sustainability Reporting Standards) are a set of standards for companies to report their ESG metrics. E1 is one of these standards, focusing on climate. It requires businesses to track and share their emissions—Scope 1, 2, and 3—covering everything from direct emissions to those throughout your entire supply chain. But it’s not just about reporting GHG emissions; it’s also about evaluating how climate-related issues impact the company financially. This is known as Double Materiality. Curious to learn more? Corporate GHG Emission Comparison: How Did Finnish Businesses Perform in 2023? Before the summer holidays, we completed an analysis comparing the CO2 emissions of Finland’s largest stock-listed companies. While it’s clear that calculation and reporting methods can vary, the introduction of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) has made it possible to create more standardized comparisons like this. In the chart, you’ll see how Scope 1–3 and Scope 1–2 emissions, relative to revenue, vary across industries and companies. ➡️ The Machinery, Finance, and Food & Beverage sectors show that the majority of their climate impact comes from their supply chains. ➡️ In contrast, the Forest and Transportation industries report much higher emissions directly from their own operations. 💡 These differences highlight how industry-specific strategies are crucial to reducing overall emissions. All data is based on public reports. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dFZJ6BnN

Today is World Vegetarian Day, and it also marks the start of "Meatless October" (Lihaton Lokakuu) here in Finland! Many of us already know that plant-based foods tend to have a smaller environmental footprint. But we, together with our clients, believe in showing the real numbers behind the claims. Is there anything more convincing than seeing the actual figures? 📊 Anton&Anton caters to all tastes and diets while being transparent about the climate impact of their products. For example, here are two similar dishes: one plant-based and one with meat. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠—𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟖𝟎% 𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬! 🥗 Papu-ragú: 1.71 kg CO2e/kg 🍝 Classic Lasagna: 10.36 kg CO2e/kg No matter your food choices, understanding the impact is a great first step toward more sustainable eating. ✨ This month is a great opportunity to try new recipes and add more greens to your plate. 🍽️🫛🥦 #WorldVegetarianDay
