Our inspiring crew from Chief Executive SearchPia Pursiainen, Aija Bärlund Sanna Juva and Eija Laine — walked the leaders through how to grow into results-driven executives and shared insider tips on landing those first board positions. How lucky it was for us to take the time to give each personalized advice. Your feedback to us sparked new ideas and perspectives on leadership that we’ll carry forward.     Leader Forum Oulu – Participatory Strategy Work: Insights into Success and Pitfalls with Rakennusliike Lapti Oy and iLOQ. In Leader Forum Oulu, we delved into participatory strategy work and its key success factors. Jussi Karjula and Valtteri Matturi shared insights from their experience with Lapti’s excellent participatory strategy work and execution, while Minna Tuomikoski presented an example of storytelling-based implementation from ILOQ. Our Partner, Vesa Schutskoff summarizes the key insights below: Lapti Group – Collaborative Strategy Work in Practice At the heart of Lapti Group’s strategy work has been strong participation, with the goal of driving deep change across different levels of the organization. Lapti has utilized the models from the books "Rescuing Strategy" and "Open Strategy, Closed Strategy", but has adapted them to fit their own needs. Their approach has been communal – the entire organization has been involved in the strategy design from the beginning. This has helped create a strategy that doesn’t just sit on the management’s desk but is visible for the entire staff. The implementation of the strategy has progressed in a planned manner, but with flexibility adapted to the situation, which has proven valuable in a rapidly changing environment. Lapti has also emphasized assigning responsibility for parts of the implementation, setting metrics, and conducting regular monitoring to ensure the strategy truly guides daily decisions and actions. ILOQ Oy – A Storytelling Strategy Resonates ILOQ Oy took a creative approach to rolling out their strategy. They used a Formula 1 theme for their 2021 strategy implementation, bringing a new level of concreteness and excitement to the goals and monitoring. The different stages of the strategy were aligned with the segments of an F1 race, and the achievement of goals was tracked according to a race calendar. This not only made the strategy more interesting but also helped clarify it across all levels of the organization. In addition to storytelling, strong symbols and well-known faces were incorporated into the strategy’s implementation, capturing the interest of the staff and creating a sense of shared purpose. This resulted in a strong commitment to the execution of the strategy. 🎯 Strategy work must reflect the company’s identity. Ready-made models, such as "Rescuing Strategy" and "Open Strategy, Closed Strategy", provide useful tools, but they work best when tailored to fit the company’s situation and culture. 🚀 The most successful strategies aren’t just theoretical plans – they are inspiring tools, suited to the company’s situation and goals, that guide everyday actions. Both Lapti and ILOQ have successfully shaped their strategy work to resonate with and engage their entire organizations, and this is the key to success.     The Future of Work: How CEOs Can Master Hybrid Strategies? We’ve noticed many CEOs feeling uncertain about how to move forward with hybrid work. The challenge is real, with a mix of benefits and drawbacks to consider. On one hand, studies show that hybrid work boosts productivity and employee satisfaction, offering flexibility that many employees now expect. On the other hand, some research warns of a potential dip in collaboration and company culture when people aren’t consistently in the same space. Striking the right balance is key. It's about adapting to what works best for your organization while keeping both productivity and team cohesion in mind. We believe that leaders should focus more on clear communication, set expectations, and foster a culture where hybrid work doesn’t mean less connection or accountability. Remember, hybrid work isn't just about where people work—it's about how they work together. If you're feeling unsure, you're not alone, and the solution might be an evolving one. We must acknowledge that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Every organization is different, and flexibility is key. What’s important is that we listen to our employees, experiment with different models, and remain open to change.     Supporting CEO Well-being > 5 Key Actions Every Board Member Should Take The life of a CEO is often perceived as glamorous—marked by high salaries, flexible schedules, and a seemingly limitless capacity to handle pressure. In this idealized view, CEOs are superhumans who never tire. But in reality, the role is far more taxing. It’s a career path that challenges well-being and resilience, where days blur into nights, and the lines between personal life and work vanish. As outlined in a recent HS Visio article, CEOs are bombarded with demands from the board, team, organization, customers, and partners, while also navigating the pressures of their public role. A highly stressed or burned-out CEO is not only a risk to themselves and their loved ones, but also to the entire company. The article highlights practical solutions, one of which is the power of coaching. From the very beginning Chief has offered for new CEO´s this service and managed to change the future. We do our best at Chief Executive Search and offer executive coaching and training. Our Partner, Pia Pursiainen, has authored a blog on how board members can actively contribute to enhancing the CEO’s well-being and performance. 🌹 Conduct regular evaluations Alongside the board’s own self-assessment, regularly assess the CEO, including an annual 360° review. The feedback gathered helps the board but, more importantly, it helps the CEO understand areas for development, as well as recognizing their strengths and unique abilities. Regular evaluations are crucial for securing the company’s future. 🌹 Offer professional coaching Providing access to a skilled coach is an investment likely to pay off. Encourage the CEO to continue developing as a leader, as the 360° review may reveal meaningful areas for growth. With the right external guidance, areas of improvement can quickly be transformed into strengths. ❤️ Acknowledge the CEO as a person When the moment is right, ask how they’re doing and show genuine interest in their well-being as an individual. Encourage the CEO to maintain a balance between work and personal life, ensuring they take care of their health despite their demanding schedule. ❤️ Ensure a strong support team Make sure that CEO has a high-quality leadership team and key individuals who truly support their role. Team should be strategic, aligned with common goals, and capable of driving results. Conducting a management audit, including the CEO, is an excellent tool for assessing the leadership’s capabilities. 🚀 Respect the CEO’s authority Don’t undermine the CEO’s authority or treat them unfairly.
