We're thrilled to share that demolition work at the site of our very first €33M PEKILO® factory has officially begun!👏 Earlier this year, we announced that the project is fully funded, and now, the time has come to turn our vision into reality as we kick off construction. "Everything is going according to plan, and we're right on track with our timeline. Procurement is in full swing, and the main equipment will be secured within a month. It's an exciting moment to see our plans begin to materialize, and the momentum will only continue to grow from here,” says Risto Ikonen, our Head of Plant Engineering. With demolition underway, we’re steadily progressing towards the construction phase. Over the coming months, you can expect updates as the building work continues. We’re excited to share this journey with you as we continue to break new ground—both figuratively and literally!

The brewers of PEKILO, the original mycoprotein. Sustainable protein is ready for scale!
About us
Enifer, a spin-off company from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, was founded by five scientists in 2020 to develop and commercialize the proprietary PEKILO® technology further. A process originally developed and used by the Finnish forest industry at a commercial scale, the PEKILO® technology enables the biotechnological conversion of dilute side streams into a high-protein ingredient, PEKILO® mycoprotein. Transforming circular economy by-products into planet friendly protein - This is our recipe for a sustainable food system that enables healthy and tasty diets for all.

🍄 🥓 "Finnish paper and pulp companies had a lot of side-streams causing eutrophication and oxygen depletion. And then they realized that fungal fermentation could be one way to upcycle these byproduct streams." #Alternativeproteins are a fast growing market driven by health and wellness trends, rising vegetarian and vegan populations and environmental concerns. Europe is highly dependent on soy imports from countries like Brazil as its main source of non-animal based protein source. Not only does this impact the European farmers' price competitiveness, but associated topics like deforestation raise questions of sustainability. In episode 6, CEO and Co-Founder Simo Ellilä from the Finnish start-up Enifer introduces us to a new category of alternative proteins, based on fungi: #mycoproteins. In their quest to move away from using unsustainable land animal production systems, Enifer applies a traditional fungal fermentation process that originates from the Finnish pulp and paper sector to convert side-streams into proteins for the food, animal feed, pet food and acquaculture feed industries. We covered topics like 🔄 The advantages of mycoproteins including their immune boosting properties 🔄 How Finland is positioning itself as an alternative protein country 🔄 What type of funding Enifer has secured to build their new industrial scale plant within an existing sugar refinery 🔄 Why Venture Capital funds are still shying away from high CAPEX business models in the industrial biotech sphere 🔄 Why #economicallocation is a fairer way measure environmental impact than CO2 footprint, and why you should include other factors like water usage and eutrophication in your impact calculations! 💡 Thank you Simo for sharing your expertise on the alternative proteins industry, the fungal fermentation process of Enifer and the complexities of measuring the holistic impact of waste valorization! 🎙 Tune in on Spotify, Apple Podcasts & Co to hear the full episode and make sure to follow bioCircular Loop for summary articles, informative videos and updates!

👋 A great read for anyone interested in sustainable feed, particularly the cutting-edge potential of single-cell proteins like PEKILO® Single-cell proteins are highly appealing for several reasons: ♻ They are rich in essential amino acids, making them an ideal ingredient for animal diets. ♻ Compared to traditional proteins, they produce significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions and require less water and land. ♻ They can be produced from industrial by-products and waste streams, promoting a circular economy and enhancing resource efficiency. While feed companies are eager to reduce reliance on traditional protein sources, scaling up novel ingredients presents challenges, as discussed by Skretting’s Annette Berntsen and Enifer’s Simo Ellilä. Fortunately, there are also solutions! Discover these solutions and see how they can shape the future of feed by following the link! FeedNavigator https://lnkd.in/eShdvY_k
