In our latest article Kim Sjödahl, explores the pioneering initiatives shaping the future of sustainable composites manufacturing beyond production processes to end-of-life considerations, including recycling and waste management. Composite materials present a particular challenge for recycling due to their complex composition and structure. One innovative approach tackling this problem is the KiMuRa project in Finland that spearheads the development of a circular economy model for composite products by implementing open-loop recycling techniques to transform composite waste into cement through co-processing. Did you know composites can help increase the transmission capacity of existing electrical lines through reconductoring? 💡 Our product management team got to visit an installation site of transmission system operator Elia Group near Brussels, Belgium, where they’re renewing the 380 kV transmission line between Mercator and Bruegel. Reconductoring, which means changing just the conductor part of the overhead-line, was chosen for this project as it is a fast and cost-efficient way to increase the transmission capacity and maintain the old towers and utility corridor. Using carbon fiber composite core enables putting more aluminum around the core resulting in almost double the transmission capacity compared to the traditional ACSR conductor which uses steel as the core. Additionally, the composite core results in way less line sagging. Other companies taking part in the visit included De Angeli Prodotti S.r.l., 50Hertz Transmission GmbH and Swissgrid AG. The group learned about the reconductoring process and the advanced conductor solution, ACCS Sens, created by De Angeli Prodotti S.r.l. https://lnkd.in/dRsX5ZMD Being a global pultrusion expert, specializing in high quality and volume composites production, Exel is well placed to provide spooled carbon rods to be used as conductor cores and help the increasing energy demand through sustainable modernization of the transmission grids. #everyWireEverywhere #energytransition #electrification #Energie #Energiewende #Strom #Swissgrid #energiezukunft #composites #compositematerials #HTLS #pultrusion #conductorcore

🚌 🚍 Pultruded composites are an excellent choice for bus and coach profiles. "Many might know about the light weight, excellent corrosion resistance and thermal insulating properties of composites," says Patrick Loock our Sales Director for Europe. A less obvious point is the ability to make wider and more complex shapes with pultrusion. Fiberglass side panels of up to 1.2 m wide and 12 m long are possible, whereas, aluminum profiles are more limited in size. Having one continuous panel reduces the complexity of assembly and maintenance compared to using multiple pieces. Using one panel is also cheaper overall than manufacturing or buying fixings and attaching pieces together.
