About us
The Finnish 3R Centre acts as a platform for promoting development and use of methods and strategies based on the 3Rs in education and scientific research as well in animal breeding and keeping. This will be accomplished by increasing education and training of the researchers on 3R methods, further the development of these methods, and dissemination of the best practices to researchers and operators.

Such an inspiring last month of research discussions around the world! I am honored to have been able to share and discuss different aspects of our research, from multiple angles and setups, and to both share and broaden my perspective on our research. First, I had the opportunity to present at #SfN2024 in Chicago, then for the HUS neurologists in Helsinki, and now this week at the FIN3R symposium in Oulu. Huge thanks to the University of Helsinki doctoral school, the Finnish Foundation for Drug Research, and FIN3R for supporting my travel to present at these venues.

It's time to wrap up a Nordic #3Rs week! After excellent Danmarks 3R-Center symposium I catched up with FIN3R meeting in Oulu! The second day was opened by our Replacement director Johanna Englund and featured Andreas Romaine and Anna Dowbaj who presented novel approaches (from mice to dish or organoids) in studying cardiac and liver pathologies. Excellent techniques are available, but not yet for addressing all in vivo complexities. However, I believe researchers are smart enough to pick and focus on the *best* available models (principle of Replacement). Therefore, the next session addressed efforts to refine methods used in mouse experiments. Megan Jackson presented recently launched 3Hs initiative - Housing-Handling-Habituation, followed by great talk by Julia Swan showing practical examples on improving mouse handling and how positive effects this has on research. Short talks by Sara Häkli and Outi Kummu further stressed importance of "animal-centric" approaches - need for creativity and not stopping in thinking how the experiments shall be refined. Monique Havermans reminded us about importance of openness and transparency around #animalresearch, outreach to public and patient organisations. After lunch break (btw - close to 100 participants were present), we continued with good scientific practice. First, Guillaume Pavlovic presented recently published LAG-R guidelines for improving genetic reporting (https://lnkd.in/dq--a8Pm) , followed by Gillian Currie reminding us about importance of good experimental design. The last talk was given by Otto Kalliokoski - always inspiring, even if the topic was about fraud in animal studies (consequence of violating almost everything we learned during these days; but why - many reasons & incentives may contribute) - and we need to talk about that to increase awareness, and fraudsters must know that they will be caught sooner or later, excellent work of many #ScienceIntegrity sleuths. Many thanks to local organisers - especially Reetta Hinttala 👏 Hanna-Marja Voipio Sakari Laaksonen who were supported by colleagues at Fin3R - Mikko Airavaara Satu Kuure Sara Sladakovic Dario Greco

Honored to participate in the great FIN3R annual symposium in Oulu to foster the quality of biomedical research! Inspiring presentations, brilliant minds, fundamental principles of research quality, experimental design, randomization, blinding, avoiding of bias, power analysis and hypothesis driven research. Grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and discuss. Reduction, refinement, replacement and reproducibility!

In the last session of the Finnish 3Rs Annual Symposium 2024, we had an opportunity to discuss many interesting topics! Guillaume Pavlovic has presented Institut Clinique de la Souris's efforts in the standardization and improving of the laboratory animal genetic reporting. Refinement in the preclinical research has been the main topic of Gillian Curie's talk, providing interesting insight at research done at the University of Bristol. Finally, our keynote speaker, Otto Kalliokoski from Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen, presented a surprising data on fraudulent animal studies. We have engaged in the discussion of how it impacts the research and how such occurrences could be prevented. We are extending a big thank you for everyone attending the workshops and lectures, all of the speakers for the amazing efforts they are giving to the science and willingness to share it with us, all the sponsors for their support and participation in our activities and our organizing committee and University of Oulu for a smooth and flawless meeting! Until next year! 👋 #fin3r #symposium #finland #3Rs #refinement #replacement #reduction

The refinement session today was dedicated to a discussion on the habituation, handling, and housing of rodents 🐭 The 3Hs initiative was a main topic for Megan Jackson from the University of Bristol, while Julia Swan from the University of Eastern Finland has shared insightful practices and protocols for handling rodents, how it can impact their well-being, and the research outcomes. Today, the three short oral presentations were centered around good practices of animal experiments, showing a lot of useful findings! #fin3r #3Rs #finland #symposium #refinement #reduction #replacement

Wrapping up the session of great presentations! The morning was reserved for the introduction of the FIN3R's Replacement activities, followed by the presentations showing the transition from the use of animals to alternative models in research! First, Andreas Romaine from the University of Oslo presented his work on cardiac fibrosis, followed by Anna Dowbaj from MPI-CBG - Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, sharing lessons from alternatives in liver research. Thank you for the very important and interesting talks! #fin3r #symposium #3Rs #finland #replacement #refinement #reduction

The Finnish 3Rs Annual Symposium kicked off yesterday! After having the first day reserved for the practical workshops, today was dedicated to scientific talks! First for the day was Dario Greco, (Tampere University, Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology) discussing integrated approaches in toxicology. Following, Daniel Persson from the University of Helsinki presented his research focused on anesthetic influence on cerebrospinal fluids in rodents. The poster session was finalized by inspiring short oral presentations from prospective researchers from Tampere University and the University of Oulu. To close the day, we had the honor to hear University of Zurich's Thorsten Buch and his experience regarding the breeding of laboratory animals! Tomorrow, more exciting presentations are coming, stay tuned! #fin3r #symposium #3Rs #finland #refinement #replacement #reduction #toxicology #pharmacology #laboratoryanimals #breeding #rodents #research
