Thank you, CoreAngels, for arranging the tour! The tour was truly eye-opening for us. We visited many startup hubs and laboratories for startups. Truly, GOVA feels that deep tech startups has full opportunity to grow in Portugal. The laboratories were brand new, very pleasant, and included everything needed, such as internet, water, and lots of common areas like meeting rooms, a common kitchen, and other benefits like 3D laboratories available for free. Another benefit we saw was the proximity of the laboratories to the university, where startups can get support and collaborate with university professors. We had the opportunity to attend the Algarve Impact Meetup, where we met other founders in food and algae startups. We also had many meetings with Portuguese investors. It was great to meet very experienced and hands-on investors. Additionally, we visited the Unicorn Factory in Lisbon and witnessed how Nordic startups could expand their R&D. Overall, we would like to focus on and collaborate with the Portuguese startup world, mainly because in Portugal, investors are more hands-on and open-minded than any investors we have experienced so far. Portugal is truly focused on deep tech innovation, as evidenced by all the brand new startup hubs and advanced laboratories. We also appreciated how universities are willing to collaborate and help startups a lot, and they are very open-minded. Thank you, CoreAngels, and especially Rui and Aveiro University, for dedicating your time to show us how much opportunity we have in Portugal. Is this the beginning of the end for sugar?   Price increases in sugar are now proven to have a direct impact on consumption.   ‘’Almost 60 percent of drinks sold in the United States are sugar-free, and people are getting fewer calories from soft drinks than in decades.’’ Link below.    A new study was conducted in five major US cities with clear and permanent results.   The price of white sugar soft drinks rose by 33% due to additional taxes enforced by the EU Commission of 16–48 cents per liter. This resulted in a significant impact on consumption and sales.   Like cigarettes. New taxation and sugar prices will always increase now and in the future because the incentives are massive. The financial impact on our healthcare system is one of many motivators.   One of the conclusions was that sales increased in other areas since consumers are now travelling far and wide to get cheaper sugar, candy, and alcohol.   In Denmark, most people travel to Fleggard, near the German border, to buy sodas with no sales tax. This creates an inconvenience! Inconvenience impact sales.   GOVA is developing the first healthy sugar for the mass market. It was probably the best time in history to present these kinds of innovation, and we hope to see more competition.   https://lnkd.in/dqa3nx-T

Last week I visited Japan for the first time. It wasn’t what I thought. Prior to entering Japan I had the impression that there would be robots everywhere and being highly technological. I was wrong. The society is different but in a very positive way. I’m admiring the willingness of the Japanese business ecosystem to learn, grown and share knowledge between two countries regardless of language barriers, technology, and distance. Japan has a long history in agriculture and a lot of experience and Finland has some of the best food and agritech start-ups. That’s how we can help each other moving forward and it makes it easier since we share many of the same values. Sure, we're different, but that's okay. It's actually an opportunity for us to grow together. Partnering with Nordic countries is the way to go, and we're up for the challenge. Thank you, Hokkaido, for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to present our company. Looking forward to the future and see how GOVA and Japan can work together. What about price? Start-ups get asked this question all the time. I would ask the same if I were on the other side of the table. Fortunately for us, we don't need to resort to a generic elevator pitch filled with jargon that leaves everyone too baffled to follow up with questions. ''This is the first time in my 22 years in the industry that I have seen erythritol coming in cheaper than cane sugar and fructose,” Reference, Thom King, CEO of Icon Foods, December 2023 (Note: This may diminish abit in 2024; Source below). - Polyols (Erythritol, Xylitol, Sorbitol) is some of the fastest-growing sweeteners on the market. Between 6,5%-22% CAGR. Some start-ups don't need to act as politicians. We're lucky to be one of them. __ https://lnkd.in/da3ezhWX https://lnkd.in/d3qczAZZ https://lnkd.in/dC9-4xur

Aspartame (unfortunately) now officially makes you stupider.

Aspartame now officially makes you stupider. Even in smaller doses. American researchers are now linking the sweetener aspartame to memory and learning difficulties. Inherited by your children. Which suddenly makes it 10x worse. Is this the race to the bottom for PepsiCo and Coca-Cola? I hope not. ''We show that consumption of aspartame, an FDA-approved artificial sweetener, daily for up to 16-weeks at doses equivalent to only 7-15% of the FDA recommended maximum daily intake value (equivalent to 2-4 small, 8 oz diet soda drinks per day) produces significant spatial learning and memory deficits in mice. Moreover, the cognitive deficits are transmitted to male and female descendants along the paternal lineage suggesting that aspartame's adverse cognitive effects are heritable, and that they are more pervasive than current estimates, which consider effects in the directly exposed individuals only.'' Thanks for sharing Sofus Bergholt Disclaimer* This study mentioned is on mice, and while mouse models are a common starting point in biomedical research, results may not always extrapolate to humans in a straightforward manner.
