A recent study has evaluated the performance of the NEW slit lamp-mounted iCare ST500 rebound tonometer against the gold-standard Goldmann Applanation Tonometry (GAT) for measuring intraocular pressure (IOP). The #ST500 shows good agreement with GAT over a large range of #IOP, and significantly higher repeatability compared to GAT, suggesting it may be advantageous in clinical settings where topical anesthesia or skilled staff are unavailable. A recent paper by Dr. Sanjay G Asrani and Dr. Thomas V Johnson et al. provides a comprehensive and detailed view of the relationship between intraocular pressure and #glaucoma. The authors conclude that #IOP is a highly dynamic variable and exhibits significant fluctuation. The adoption of home self-tonometry can provide eye care clinicians with more complete information about patients’ overall IOP-mediated glaucoma risk, optimize the application of efficacious therapies sooner, empower patients, and improve adherence to therapy. #ophthalmology #hometonometry

New paper published provides a comprehensive view of the relationship between intraocular pressure (#IOP) and #glaucoma. We've come to the evidence-based conclusion that the current practice of managing glaucoma by spot-checking IOP at a single time point in clinic every few months is really only giving clinicians a limited understanding of their patients' glaucoma risk upon which to base treatment decisions. I predict that this will be changing soon as remote (home) tonometry and implantable/wearable IOP sensors reach the mainstream and I look forward to the *next big evolution in glaucoma*!
