  • Introducing this #LyftaMoment taken from a brand new storyworld 'Dancing Together'. Naissa's story is timely and important amid current cultural debates around gender identity. Including this story in the curriculum fosters meaningful discussions about relationships and the complexities of identity, providing a safe space for students to explore these topics. It has the potential to counter harmful narratives and promote a more inclusive and understanding environment. This story - like all of our stories linked to the nine protected characteristics of the 2010 Equality Act - is about being human and our relationships with others. • A Curriculum Fit for the Future.

    CEO at Lyfta

𝐀 C𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐮𝐦 F𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 F𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 I was encouraged by Professor Becky Francis's keynote this morning at the ASCL Annual Conference, where she provided an update on the ongoing Curriculum and Assessment Review she is leading. While noting that England's curriculum is relatively broad and balanced compared to other countries, Becky emphasised the importance of developing "a curriculum fit for the future," which is the focus of this post. She highlighted that specific knowledge remains our best investment to secure the education young people need in a world of rapid technological and social change, mentioning foundational subjects such as maths and science. "These will remain pivotal now and in the future, as will young people's understanding of human culture through the humanities, languages and the arts." She also addressed the need to tackle opportunities and challenges arising from our fast-changing world: "The rise of artificial intelligence and trends in digital information demand heightened media literacy and critical thinking, as well as digital skills. Likewise, global social and environmental challenges require attention to scientific and cultural knowledge and skills that can equip young people to meet the challenges of the future. Rapid social, environmental and technical change necessitates that the curriculum keep pace, including a renewed focus on digital and media literacy and on sustainability and climate science." Professor Francis mentioned that her team will map existing coverage to ensure gaps are addressed and content is updated. Additionally, surveys with young people and their parents indicated a need for more focus on applied knowledge and skills that will prepare young people for later life and work, such as financial education, careers knowledge, and politics and government. She acknowledged that an ongoing challenge for the review is to address these diverse needs while remaining mindful of existing pressures on curriculum time. An interim report will be published very soon (next week, I think), with the final report expected in autumn this year.

  • A simple idea can have a profound impact... Ross Newman, CEO at The Leaf Trust shares how something as straightforward as making the school kitchen available for communities to book on a rota basis can help children reconnect with their heritage and create spaces where conversations focus on shared experiences rather than differences—fostering a sense of belonging and understanding. Thank you to all the educators who have been part of these roundtable discussions so far. The challenges are complex, but by sharing ideas and working together, we can create meaningful change. We still have a few spaces available for our roundtable dinner discussions next week in London on Monday, Manchester on Tuesday (co-hosted with Manny Botwe) and in Liverpool on Wednesday (co-hosted with Ian Parry from Southport Learning Trust). If you're a trust leader keen to be part of this important conversation, please register your interest here. https://hubs.la/Q039F6Rc0

  • "We were talking about... all the media and everything our children are faced with every single day. And you look across the world and you look at our news and you see the divide there is in the world, and the opinion about the divide. People are very opinionated and that then feeds into the media our children are seeing. But you bring in a story, and stories are so powerful, because everybody relates to a story... and suddenly everything is different and that divide isn't there in the same way." Flora C. Executive Head, John Rankin Schools reflecting on our polarised society and the power of stories to focus on our common humanity. At our recent roundtable discussions for education leaders, one of the many themes explored was the power of human stories to connect us. In an age of misinformation and increased polarisation, seeing and valuing our common humanity is vital and helps young people make sense of the world and their place within it. By making time and holding space for these important conversations, together we’re shaping a future where students are equipped with curiosity, compassion, and critical thinking to thrive. We still have a few spaces available for our roundtable dinner discussions in the North West next week. If you're a trust leader who would like to be part of the conversation, please register your interest here. https://bit.ly/4ko5pOO Serdar Ferit, Leah Stewart, Rahul Karavadra
