Happy International Day of Forests! 🌲
What is regenerative forestry? 🌳 🌲 It is economically viable forest management so that forests become more vibrant, diverse and climate-resilient. Our goal is to strengthen the value of nature capital together with the economic value generated by forests, as in addition to trees commercial forests provide numerous vital natural benefits for both people and the environment. Forests purify water, provide habitats for pollinators, produce berries and mushrooms, create opportunities for recreation and act as carbon sinks. According to recent study*, switching from white-lined chipboard (WLC) to Metsä Board’s folding boxboard can reduce the carbon footprint of food packaging by over 60%. The assessments*, conducted by Metsä Board and verified by the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, demonstrated the significant carbon footprint reductions achieved by switching to Metsä Board’s folding boxboard, compared to grades representative of European markets. *) Assessments follow procedural and methodological requirements of ISO 14025 and are consistent with ISO 14040 and 14044 standards. The selected system boundary for the study was cradle-to-gate + end-of-life and selected climate change impact methodology was EF3.1 Climate Change - total. Climate change impacts for competing materials utilises data from Sphera LCA for Packaging, which seeks to represent general products in the European market. The technical background report and the 3rd party verification statement are available on Metsä Board’s website. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dYTMr8FE #MetsäBoard #Foodpackaging #PackagingInnovation #FBB #Foldingfboxboard

Retail Responding to evolving packaging regulations 📦 In Europe, packaging legislation is becoming increasingly strict as the EU seeks to reduce the use of plastic in packaging while promoting the circular economy and recyclability. The changes affect the entire value chain in the packaging industry, from packaging producers to retailers. Kesko - K-Group, one of Finland’s largest retail chains, is committed to the EU’s Directive on single-use plastics (SUP-D), which aims to reduce single-use plastic packaging. Tuuli Luoma 柳风, Director of Sales and Own Brands at Kesko, shares: “We closely follow discussions and decision making related to legislation. We participate in public dialogue with both the authorities and interest groups. This keeps us up to date on changes to legislation.” “We carefully consider various materials solutions. We try to look into the future and anticipate which solutions will continue to function years from now in terms of recyclability and waste reduction,” Luoma says. Kesko expects its raw material suppliers to provide innovative packaging solutions to help solve challenges related to recyclability or sustainable packaging materials.
