On a mission to reduce the environmental impact of the shipping industry.

About us

Norsepower is on a mission to reduce the environmental impact of the shipping industry. As leaders and innovators in naval architecture and marine engineering, we are harnessing the potential of wind and bringing sails back to shipping, one vessel at a time. A Finnish company at heart with an international reach, our sails have navigated waters across the globe. Sustainability is at our core, and we’ve helped ships to save thousands of tons of global CO2 emissions to date. We put nature first and believe that our Norsepower Rotor Sail™, along with our AI-based technology, can help to decarbonize the maritime industry by providing reliable and efficient wind propulsion solutions.

Following the conclusion of #MEPC 82 last week, check out Norsepower’s Head of R&D, Ville Paakkari’s insightful thoughts on the significant milestones achieved during the negotiations below! 🚢🌍 As Ville highlights, decarbonization of shipping in order to meet the International Maritime Organization’s net zero by 2050 ambitions was the session’s primary focus, signalling growing global commitments to transitioning away from harmful fuels. Norsepower is committed to continuing to support policymakers in driving decarbonization across global shipping through powerful wind-assisted technology.   #Climatechange #SustainableShipping #Decarbonization #Innovation #Norsepower #MEPC

The important gathering of the 82nd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) last week saw industry leaders and regulators across the shipping industry come together in London to discuss the significant environmental challenges facing our seas. Given that the session’s outcomes are critical to shaping the regulations that will guide the future of sustainable shipping, I wanted to share a few of my key takeaways. 🌊 👇 It is very encouraging to see that the development of vital mid-term GHG reduction measures was a key focus of this meeting. The initial draft text to amend the MARPOL Convention, as announced by the MEPC, will help ensure delivery of the @International Maritime Organization’s goal for global shipping to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050. Further discussions will take place in February next year, marking another step forward to meeting the emission cuts committed to in the 2023 greenhouse gas strategy. However, the feeling across the industry is that with six months until the next crucial IMO deadline, every moment counts if we are to meet decarbonization targets. Norsepower therefore continues to be committed to supporting decision-makers and working closely with regulators, by providing the relevant information, accurate data and drawing on our wealth of expertise to inform guidance and upcoming legislation. In order to deliver the mid-term GHG reduction measures which have been committed to, wind propulsion must form a key part of these developments. At Norsepower, we’re committed to saving on fuel to protect our seas and the planet through the power of the Norsepower Rotor Sail™.  Championing the innovation and technology seen across the wind propulsion industry within MEPC policy is the crucial piece in the puzzle when it comes to achieving the 2050 targets. #MEPC82 #IMO #Climatechange #Maritime #Norsepower #SustainableShipping © the artist/courtesy Flowers Gallery, London and New York. As the #MEPC 82 kicks off in London today, the meeting marks a pivotal moment for shipping's transition to renewable energy sources and agreeing on climate regulations that are effective and efficient.🚢🌱 #MEPC 82 will discuss a range of environmental matters, including proposed mid-term measures for the reduction of #GHG emissions from ships and enhancing energy efficiency of global shipping, which is essential if the industry is to meet vital global emissions targets by 2050. Norsepower was therefore very pleased to support the International Windship Association’s submission for the #MEPC 82 session, which provides a detailed assessment of technically measuring and developing wind propulsion technology to implement the 2023 International Maritime Organization's Strategy on Reduction of #GHG emissions from ships. The paper recommends an amended formula which considers wind propulsion as part of the calculation of attained Greenhouse Gas Fuel Intensity, so that wind energy is accounted for equitably within a ship’s carbon intensity. We look forward to seeing the IMO’s recommendations and urge for more concrete action to ensure direct wind propulsion is treated equally to any other zero-carbon energy onboard vessels. ✅ 👉Check out the International Windship Association’s submission here which highlights why wind propulsion must be a key feature of the IMO’s decarbonization recommendations: https://lnkd.in/eHCxZd3c. #Climate #MEPC82 #IMO #windpropulsion #sustainableshipping #Norsepower

Insightful reflections from Norsepower’s CEO, Heikki Pöntynen, on his first #WorldMaritimeDay with us. 🚢🌍   The theme “Navigating the future: safety first!” highlights the crucial balance between driving innovation in the shipping industry for a sustainable future while maintaining the highest safety standards.   As Heikki points out, we’ve been very busy over the last few months, and now is not the time to slow down. Through collaboration with our partners, we’re working together to create impactful solutions, pushing the boundaries of what's possible for the industry.   Let’s continue to navigate the future of shipping safely and sustainably.   #SustainableShipping #Decarbonization #Innovation #WorldMaritimeDay

This #WorldMaritimeDay is my first one at @Norsepower’s helm. This year, the day’s theme is “Navigating the future: safety first!”. In an era of exciting technological advances, the safety of ships, seafarers, and the marine environment must all be guaranteed.    Today seems like the perfect time to reflect on what I’ve learnt so far about the current state of the shipping industry and the collective journey we’re embarking on to transform it safely.    Norsepower is a business defined by innovation and ambition. Since joining, I’ve been proud of our momentum when it comes to helping the shipping industry decarbonize.     In the past four months alone, we’ve introduced an innovative new calculation method to ensure vessels’ compliance with IMO regulations, completed retrofit installations of our sails on three carriers, and finalized plans to fit four Union Maritime tankers with our technology, with another eight vessels being built “rotor sail ready”.    This activity is testament to the dedication and ingenuity of my Norsepower colleagues. I am incredibly proud and lucky to be part of a truly first-class team.    And now is not the time to take our foot off the accelerator if shipping is going to meet the IMO’s decarbonization goals of a 20% reduction by 2030, 70% by 2040, and a total reduction by 2050.     At Norsepower, we are committed to helping the industry make even more progress on sustainability, whether by advising policymakers on legislation, introducing new patent-protected materials and methods to our manufacturing process.   All of this results in ships benefitting from lower emissions and fuel savings while also safeguarding our precious marine environment.    But the urgency with which we need to decarbonize shipping cannot – and must not – mean we cut corners when it comes to the diligence and precision which is paramount in the industry.    Decades of experience in shipping have taught me that meeting our climate goals safely will require collaboration in many forms. Our longstanding partnership with DNV is a perfect example of this: together, we developed the first ever Wind Assisted Propulsion System-related Type Approval Design Certificate, which has been instrumental in setting industry standards.   This partnership reached another milestone earlier this month when our explosion-proof Norsepower Rotor Sails became the first-ever wind assisted propulsion system to receive DNV approval for use in hazardous zones on board vessels.   More widely, continued cross-industry collaboration with partners like International Windship Association, NAPA, @RINA and @RISE means advancing R&D, optimising data analytics, forming effective policies, and making sustainable shipping solutions readily available.     Working together will be paramount in overhauling a global industry for the better, while also improving its safety, reliability, and potential. Happy World Maritime Day!    #WorldMaritimeDay #Norsepower #SustainableShipping
