🔔 Be sure to test The Crisis Preparedness Checklist and Dynamic Map! 🏡 These tools have been created in RESCUE to facilitate the design of resilient built environments and step from theoretical resilience discussion towards practical implementation. 🗺 The Checklist and Dynamic Map provide questions that allow each checklist user to ask themselves these questions in their project and consider the best ways to implement them in their context. They include possible crisis scenarios and responses which could minimise the impact of the crisis on the built environment. Scenario thinking can be used to identify effective solutions to potential future challenges. The dynamic map also includes example solutions and case studies. 🔎 You can find the tools here (In Finnish and English): https://lnkd.in/dDed4uEs #RESCUEFinland #ResilientBuiltEnvironment #UrbanResilience #Sustainability #CrisisManagement

🏘 Housing is under growing pressure to respond to various societal challenges such as ageing population, climate change, and increasing working from home. A recent study by the RESCUE researchers, titled "Housing design quality in Finland: Room for improvement" in Architectural Research in Finland, investigates how the apartments of a Finnish social housing provider supported residents’ daily lives and well-being and how this can be improved. 🔍 Out of 142 rental and right-of-occupancy apartment blocks in the Tampere and Turku regions, this paper focuses on the analysis of ten selected blocks, with a detailed evaluation of housing design quality based on the floor plans of two representative blocks. The investigated aspects covered daylight, circulation, furnishability, and spatial connections. The results highlighted that there is room for improvement to create more resilient living environments. 📝 Key Findings: 1. Daylight conditions fell below best practices in certain areas, particularly where balconies shaded the main living space and due to room depth limiting daylight reaching the back parts. 2. The furnishable floor area was fragmented and reduced by essential circulation areas, which occupied an average of 40% of the habitable floor area. 3. Only 28% of the habitable room floor area enjoyed both good daylighting and furnishability. 4. Potential improvements include better integration of furnishable and well daylit spaces, enhanced circulation area design to improve furnishability, and the creation of multiple routes within the apartment to empower residents to adjust their privacy level. ❕ Be sure to see the recent RESCUE publication ❕ Castaño-Rosa, R., Pelsmakers, S., Wang, J., & Cao, S.- jie. (2024). Building Management Systems in residential buildings: their role in energy and indoor climate resilience. Architectural Research in Finland, 8(1), 42–62. https://lnkd.in/dxDVHCwQ 🏘 This study elaborates on the role of Building Management Systems (BMS) in promoting energy efficiency and indoor climate resilience in residential buildings. 🔅 Findings show that promoting resilience in residential buildings through the implementation of BMS is not explicitly investigated in the existing literature, instead, the focus is on promoting energy efficiency, innovation and climate change mitigation. Furthermore, main BMS are designed based on solely technical parameters, neglecting social and human factors. 📣 This study therefore argues for the need to adopt a human-centred design approach to include key aspects of adaptability, flexibility, equity and inclusivity in the design and implementation of BMS in residential buildings. 🔎 See the full publication here: https://lnkd.in/depsFhkh #RESCUEFinland #BMS #BuiltEnvironmentResilience #ClimateAction 🌿🏠 Check the other RESCUE publications at the website: https://lnkd.in/dc8n8mcV

🌟 New RESCUE Research Published! 🌟 The latest research article by Jyrki Tarpio, Raul Castaño de la Rosa and Sofie Pelsmakers delves into the crucial role of construction professionals in promoting resilience in the built environment, especially in the face of ongoing crises such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and the impact of the pandemic on well-being. 📄 Title: Promoting resilience in Finland: Built environment professionals’ perspectives This research involved targeted focus group interviews with 32 Finnish experts including city planners, housing specialists, architects, and sustainability experts. Here's a snapshot of the findings: 1️⃣ Current Integration: All Finnish built environment professionals, except housing architects, can currently integrate some resilience aspects into their work. 2️⃣ Early Introduction: Resilience should be incorporated into building projects and processes from the outset. 3️⃣ Collaborative Effort: No single profession can introduce all key aspects of resilience. 4️⃣ Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Committee work and information products by the Finnish Building Information Foundation offer a practical avenue for integrating resilience into Finnish building projects and processes. This study emphasises the importance of dynamic engagement by built environment professionals and the need for proactive measures to enhance resilience in construction projects. In addition, it introduces a crisis preparedness checklist as a practical tool to develop resilience. 🌐 Exciting Collaborations Down Under! In January, RESCUE consortium lead Saija Toivonen and doctoral researcher Lassi Tähtinen had the privilege of participating in the 30th Annual Conference by the Pacific Rim Real Estate Society on the Gold Coast. They shared key findings from RESCUE, exchanged insights with peers, and delved into diverse presentations on contemporary built environment research. Gladly, the collaboration extended beyond the conference as Saija and Lassi joined forces with Riikka Kyrö and Rebecka Lundgren from Lund University. Together, they met with RESCUE collaborator Sara J Wilkinson at the University of Technology Sydney, and Resilience Specialist Nick Chapman from Willoughby Council. This provided a fascinating glimpse into the extensive #resilience initiatives happening in Sydney and its diverse suburbs.
