Ever felt inspired by bad dubbing? Mati did. As childhood friends, Mati Staniszewski and Piotr Dabkowski used to watch movies together in Poland. They both grew up and went on to build careers in technology, as many of our speakers at Slush have. A few years ago, they reflected back on their upbringing. Specifically, they were feeling inspired by the “poor” dubbing they saw of the American movies they watched growing up. They wanted to leverage their tech backgrounds to solve the problem. Soon enough, the pair set about designing a platform that could eliminate the linguistic barriers of content. This led to creating a company together: ElevenLabs. The company has raised over €100m in funding, backed by Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, among others. Within the span of just two years (!), ElevenLabs is now worth over 1 billion dollars. "Freemium: yes or no?" A question that can generate a lot of different answers, clearly. 🌀Mona is building Arca, and for her, freemium was a total no-brainer for the company because of its industry—the consumer internet space. 🌀 Antti from Synergi actually let us know that the company has let go of their freemium model entirely. They’ve found their revenue should come from a different place, and they need that top-level growth free access gives them. 🌀 Verneri from Veri (acquired by ŌURA) let us know that if you’re doing freemium, you should move as quickly as possible to paid. Why? Because the only way you’ll find out if you’re giving value is if people pay for it. They all agreed on one thing, though: using freemium completely depends on the product or service you’ve got.
