On the eve of the Annual Forum we had a rare chance to sit down and discuss the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region Action Plan update with representatives from Baltic Sea States Subregional Co-operation (BSSSC), Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) and Union of the Baltic Cities (UBC). Some highlights and recommendations: 🔵 The strategy is established to enable coordinated cooperation. 🔵 The Strategy has to be better known by civil servants, otherwise implementation on all governance levels is impossible. 🔵 Wider representation of the regions in the Policy Area Steering Groups could be a way to make the voice of the regions better heard. Thank you for the constructive dialogue and recommendations! Action Plan update process generates powerful momentum for consultations like this. Now it is our duty and responsibility to consider these recommendations in the updated Action Plan so that stakeholders on all governance levels can feel ownership of the defined Actions.

About us
WHAT? The EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) aims at saving the Baltic Sea, connecting the region and increasing prosperity. WHY? The Strategy is an agreement between the Member States of the EU and the European Commission to strengthen cooperation between the countries bordering the Baltic Sea in order to meet the common challenges and to benefit from common opportunities facing the region. WHO? The EU member states involved in the EUSBSR are Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Implementation is coordinated in close contact with the European Commission, and other member states, regional and local authorities, inter-governmental and non-governmental bodies. The Strategy is also welcoming cooperation with EU neighbouring countries (Iceland and Norway). HOW? Activities for implementing the EUSBSR can be, for example, projects (single or grouped in clusters), processes, networks or platforms. No new funding or institutions have been founded to support the implementation of the Strategy, and funding for operations under the Strategy is intended to come from existing financial instruments. This LinkedIn page is maintained by the Baltic Sea Strategy Point with financial support from the Interreg Baltic Sea Programme.

Thank you to our panellists and the audience at the European Week of Regions and Cities 2024! The number of people attending the session and queuing at the door proved the demand and interest for more discussion on territorial cooperation, such as the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. Some key takeaways from the discussion: 🗝 Macro-regional strategies have done a great deal to promote transnational integration and multi-level governance in the EU and beyond, 🗝and will continue to do so, if we succeed in maintaining the political support for the territorial approach and cooperation. 🗝Nobody works in isolation anymore. It is not easy and straightforward, but coordinated collaboration is rewarding for the citizens that benefit from it. 🗝Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dAeb2uZg The European Week of Regions and Cities is the biggest annual event dedicated to EU cohesion policy. We were honoured to be selected as one of the session organisers together with the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR). Thank you once again, Moray Gilland, Marta Marín Sanchez and Fokion Zaimis for you time and wise words. Photos: European Union / Valentin Astier

The opening event of Poland's EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region Presidency focused on: #resilience and #security of the Baltic Sea Region and finding more ways to support #Ukraine. We were honoured to have the Deputy Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland to open the event - thank you for taking the time, Mr Marek Prawda! Key takeaways from yesterday 💡 Building a resilient macro-region is not possible without international cooperation. 💡 The Strategy is not for the few but for all. A wide chain of supporters on all governance levels makes it possible to implement the ambitious Action Plan. 💡 During Poland's Presidency, we are updating the EUSBSR Action Plan. Maintaining the inclusive nature of cooperation within the Strategy is highly important to Poland. Now is the time to reach out to our coordinators and have your say on the update. After 15 years of macro-regional cooperation, we can safely call the Strategy a success story. We have made a difference by bringing actors together and coordinating efforts, and should be bold enough to claim the results as our own.
