UPM Timber's Kaukas sawmill is one of the largest pine sawmills in Europe with a production capacity of 380 000 m3 of sawn timber per year. But what happens to the wood left over from sawing, when the round logs are turned into square-edged timber? 🤔 Jaakko Huttunen, the sawmill director at the Kaukas sawmill, explains the yield of sawn timber is around 47%. That means that about two cubic meters of logs are needed to produce one cubic meter of sawn timber, but yet, the whole log is carefully utilized in the process. 🪵 In addition to sawn timber, also bark, wood chips and sawdust is produced in the process. About 10% of the pine log is bark and the bark is delivered to a power plant for producing electricity and heat. Additionally, about 30% of the log turns into chips and 10% into sawdust. The chips are used as raw material for pulp at the UPM Pulp mill, while the sawdust is delivered either to the pulp mill or to the power plant for electricity and heat production. Mutta mihin sahauksesta yli jäänyt puu käytetään, kun pyöreästä tukista tehdään kantikasta sahatavaraa? 🤔 Kaukaan sahan johtaja Jaakko Huttunen kertoo UPM Metsän asiakaslehdessä, Metsän hengessä, sahatavaran saannon olevan noin 47 %, eli yhden sahatavarakuution tuottamiseen tarvitaan reilut kaksi kuutiota tukkia. Koko tukki hyödynnetään prosessissa kuitenkin tarkasti, sillä tukista saadaan sahatavaran lisäksi myös kuorta, haketta ja sahanpurua hyötykäyttöön. Mäntytukista kuorta on noin 10 % ja kuori toimitetaan samassa integraatissa sijaitsevalle lämpölaitokselle sähkön ja lämmön tuotantoa varten. Haketta tukista tulee noin 30 % ja sahanpurua 10 %. Haketta käytetään sellun raaka-aineena viereisellä UPM:n sellutehtaalla, ja puru taas toimitetaan joko sellun raaka-aineeksi tai voimalaitokselle sähkön ja lämmön tuotantoon. 💡Why to use wood as a building material? 💡 For example, because wood stores carbon for up to hundreds of years 🌲 One cubic metre (m³) of Finnish softwood weights about 400 kilograms at dry density, of which approximately 195 kilograms is carbon. Therefore, wood products act as carbon stores. The longer the products are used, the longer the carbon remains removed from the atmosphere. The length of the time carbon is stored varies depending on the product itself, how it is used and where it ends up at the end of its life cycle. For example, carbon can be stored in a wooden house for up to hundreds of years. 🏡 Finland has a long tradition of using wood in private buildings, but there is still room for increasing the amount of wood in construction. In recent years, the use of wood has been on the rise, especially in education and early childhood education buildings. 💡Miksi käyttää rakennusmateriaalina puuta? 💡 Esimerkiksi siksi, että puu varastoi hiiltä parhaimmillaan sadoiksi vuosiksi 🌲 Yksi kuutiometri (m³) kotimaista havupuuta painaa kuivatuoretiheydessä noin 400 kiloa, josta likimain puolet, noin 195 kiloa, on hiiltä. Puutuotteet toimivat siis hiilivarastoina ja mitä pidempään puutuotteet ovat käytössä, sitä pidempään hiili on poissa ilmakehästä. Hiilen varastointiaika puutuotteissa vaihtelee sen mukaan, mikä puutuote on kyseessä, miten se käytetään ja mihin puutuote päätyy elinkaarensa lopussa. Esimerkiksi puisen talon rakenteissa hiili säilyy parhaimmillaan satoja vuosia. 🏡 Suomessa puulla on pitkät perinteet rakentamisessa, mutta puun käyttöä rakentamisessa voidaan edelleen lisätä. Viime vuosina puun käyttö onkin lähtenyt kasvuun erityisesti opetus- ja varhaiskasvatuksen rakennuksissa.
