Colorado, here we come! Starting today, residents in the Eiber neighborhood of Lakewood can sign up to get connected to high-speed internet from GFiber to meet their families’ internet needs, whatever their online lives require.

Thumbnail

We’re marking the occasion with an ice cream social at The Ice Cream Farm. This afternoon many Lakewood residents braved the rain to come by and get the scoop on GFiber while enjoying some delicious frozen treats on us.

Lakewood Mayor Wendi Strom stops by our event at The Ice Cream Farm.

Lakewood customers will be able to choose any GFiber plan — 1 Gig for $70/month, 2 Gig for $100/month, 5 Gig for $125/month or 8 Gig for $150/month —  all with symmetrical uploads and downloads and equipment and installation included at no additional cost, no annual contracts and no data caps. Local businesses can sign up for GFiber for Business, offering Business 2 Gig for $250/month or Business 1 Gig for $100/month.

This is just the next step for GFiber in the Denver metro area. GFiber Webpass has been available in Denver since 2017. We’re continuing to build our network out across Lakewood. As new segments are complete, we’ll open service in those neighborhoods. Additionally, we’re set to start construction in Westminster soon, and actively working on design and permitting for Golden, Wheat Ridge, and additional parts of Adams County.  For the latest on our construction progress and service availability in Colorado, sign up here.

Today is National 8/11 Day; August 11th highlights the significance of underground excavation safety when doing home projects. By reinforcing the importance of calling the national 811 hotline before digging, everyone can help prevent damage to underground utilities and ensure the safety of workers and homeowners alike.

Thumbnail

In the United States, nearly every digging project, regardless of its size or location, requires contacting 811 a few days in advance of breaking ground. This free, national service connects homeowners with their local utility companies and others who may have infrastructure assets underground, who will mark the locations of underground lines such as gas, electric, and water pipes, as well as internet lines. By calling 811 before digging, homeowners can avoid accidentally damaging these lines, which can lead to injuries, property damage, loss of service, and costly repairs.

Excavation accidents are far too common, causing damage to underground utilities and posing a significant risk to public safety. According to the Common Ground Alliance’s (“CGA”) annual DIRT Report (issued in conjunction with CGA’s affiliated Damage Prevention Institute), over 213,000 excavation-related damages occurred in the United States in the year 2022 alone. However, data collection, transparency, and industry collaboration of the nature reflected in the DIRT Report are instrumental tools in the fight to mitigate the frequency of excavation-related accidents. We have been impressed with the work that CGA and the Damage Prevention Institute have done and would encourage others in the industry to join and participate.

Homeowners play a vital role in preventing excavation accidents by contacting 811 by phone or online before any digging project, no matter how small. Even if you are just planting a tree, installing a fence, or building a deck, it's crucial to contact 811 to have underground utilities marked before you start digging.

Once a call comes in to 811, a Utility Locator will come out to mark the location of existing underground infrastructure by spray painting the sidewalk or lawn or putting in flags. Being a Utility Locator is a tough job. These individuals are helping to save lives by taking affirmative safety measures designed to avoid major damages that in extreme circumstances lead to loss of life. Please help us get this important message out by sharing with your neighbors that these Locators are doing this job as a public service. In fact, you might even want to thank a Locator next time you see them! By working together, we can create a safer environment for everyone and make sure everyone’s utility services stay online.

Our internet services should “just work”, and typically that is the case. The foundation of the internet is millions of miles of fiber optic cable that connect each of us to the online world. These cables are continuously at risk of damage from construction activities (and the same could be said for utilities as well). Locators are the first line of defense, working diligently to provide a safe working environment for excavators, and ensuring access to the internet whenever we need it.

Thank you for being proactive when it comes to making that 811 call - on 8/11 and every day. GFiber is committed to doing our part. We use 811 for all of our construction projects, and we’re going even further. By leveraging large public databases of historic utility damages, a detailed model of the GFiber network, and 811 locate tickets, GFiber is developing an AI model that can better predict when and where damage to our network may occur. This will allow GFiber to implement additional protective measures in high-risk areas.

We’re going coastal in Carolina! Google Fiber is bringing high speed internet service to Wilmington. The City of Wilmington approved an agreement paving the way for GFiber to bring our network to our first Coastal Carolina metro.

Thumbnail

We’ve already started the engineering process for the Wilmington network and plan to start construction later this year, serving our first customers in the city in 2025. Residents can sign up for updates here.

If you’ve been following along, you know that Google Fiber has been steadily growing in our existing metros in North Carolina as well — including new agreements to build networks in Harrisburg, Kannapolis and Stallings, beginning to serve our first new customers in Hillsborough, and breaking ground in Huntersville. We’re also continuing to build out our networks in Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte and the surrounding communities, opening up service to new neighborhoods weekly across these metro areas.

Additionally, we recently started installations in Raleigh-Durham for our GFiber Labs 20 Gig service, making NC the first state to get this product. Response has been exceptional across the country, and we’re excited that customers here are the first to get to put all that speed to use.

But North Carolina isn’t our only Carolina! When GFiber announced last October that we’re coming to Tega Cay, everyone wanted to know what else we were planning in South Carolina. Since then,  we have been hard at work, designing our fiber optic network to serve more communities in the Palmetto State.

In February, we placed our first SC fiber hut in Fort Mill. This critical piece of infrastructure will power and connect customers in Tega Cay and other neighboring SC communities. We’ll be starting network construction in Tega Cay in the next few weeks and will have more to share on that, and on new GFiber communities in the area soon!

In February, GFiber announced that we’re bringing high speed internet to Clark County, our first foray into Nevada. Now, we're pleased to share that we’re planning to expand that network to the City of Las Vegas. The Las Vegas City Council is currently considering an agreement that will enable us to bring fast, reliable internet to Las Vegas residents.

Thumbnail

Over the past decade, Las Vegas has been one of the fastest growing cities in the country, attracting new people and businesses daily. GFiber is looking forward to connecting this vibrant community to great internet service, with symmetrical speeds up to 8 gig, as it continues to grow.

GFiber is already working on the engineering design for Las Vegas. The Las Vegas City Council will vote on our agreement on June 5. Once that is in place, we can get to work on the permitting process with city staff. GFiber plans to begin construction in the City of Las Vegas early next year and serve our first customers in 2025. Local residents who want up-to-date information on service availability or the construction process can sign up here.

It’s been awhile since we shared an update on what’s happening with Google Fiber in San Antonio. We’ve been hard at work upgrading our network to provide the best customer experience possible and to make sure we meet the evolving needs of our customers.

Thumbnail

Faster

As we’ve made the improvements to our San Antonio network, we’ve also been installing XGS PON — which means, as of today, many San Antonio residents can sign up for GFiber’s incredibly fast 5 Gig and 8 Gig services. With both of these products, customers get symmetrical uploads and download speeds, a GFiber Wi-Fi 6E Router (which allows for up to 1600 Mbps over Wi-Fi) and up to two Mesh Extenders to extend your home’s Wi-Fi coverage, and, as with all our plans, unlimited data, professional installation, and access to GFiber’s highly-rated customer service.

Farther

Across the country, there has been a consistent struggle to broaden access to the internet. In 2023, according to the Texas Comptroller’s office, nearly one-third of households in the San Antonio metropolitan area lacked a high-speed internet connection, one of the worst rates of any metro area in the country. In fact, over ten percent of the city’s population had no internet access at all. This number is staggering and unacceptable. GFiber has been working with the City of San Antonio and Bexar County to connect more homes in the region to fast, reliable internet. Since we began offering service in San Antonio in 2016, we have continued to expand to new neighborhoods throughout the metro area, including most recently, neighborhoods in and around Windcrest, near Morgan’s Wonderland, and the Stone Oak and Encino areas. We also recently started serving our first neighborhoods in unincorporated Bexar County—in areas located both to the east and west of the San Antonio city limits.

Fairer

Access is just one piece of digital inclusion. In our efforts to further digital equity initiatives in the city, we are working with a number of committed community organizations, including:

San Antonio is a vibrant city with a rich culture. GFiber is committed to expanding its footprint in the city, providing more San Antonians with what they deserve: fast, reliable internet. And there’s more to come!

If you are interested in what’s happening in your neighborhood, you can sign up for updates here. You can also follow us on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) to get the latest news on GFiber.

Get ready, Nebraska! Beginning today, Google Fiber’s first customers in Omaha can sign up for the service of their choice. We’re starting in the Aksarben neighborhood  — residents can choose 1 Gig, 2 Gig, 5 Gig or 8 Gig to meet their family’s internet needs.

And what better way to celebrate than with a little bit of BBQ (as a Kansas City native, we’re big on our barbecue). Thank you to Oklahoma Joe’s in Aksarben Village where we proved there was such a thing as a free lunch for the customers who came in today to learn more about GFiber. Omaha City Council Member Danny Begley, who represents the neighborhood, was on hand to mark the occasion and to welcome us to Omaha officially.

Thumbnail

Whichever GFiber internet service new customers in Omaha select — 1 Gig for $70/month, 2 Gig for $100/month, 5 Gig for $125/month or 8 Gig for $150/month —  they also get symmetrical uploads and downloads and equipment and installation included at no additional cost, along with no annual contracts and no data caps. We also offer GFiber for Business. Local businesses can choose between Business 2 Gig for $250/month or Business 1 Gig for $100/month.

GFiber is just getting started in Omaha. We recently started construction in Bellevue and Council Bluffs, and we’re hard at work to connect more of the city as quickly as possible. As new segments are completed in Omaha, we’ll offer service in those neighborhoods. To stay up to date our construction progress and service availability, sign up here.

We’re launching 8 Gig in our largest and oldest market — the original Google Fiber metro — Kansas City. The city was recently designated as one of the country’s 31 Tech Hubs by the federal government, a move that recognized both the incredible assets and resources already in the area and the potential for innovation that that infrastructure represents. GFiber is proud to have been part of that growth and development over the past twelve years, helping to drive innovation and testing the limits of speed as our first test site for 20 Gig.

Thumbnail

KC was also one of the first GFiber cities to get our 5 Gig service. We’ve been steadily rolling out our new multigig products in Google Fiber cities across the country since early last year. To do this, we’re updating our network in each city to XGS PON to ensure that we can meet our customers’ needs as they grow over time. We’re upgrading our network holistically across all our markets.

Included in the monthly cost, 8 Gig customers get symmetrical upload and download speeds of up to 8000 Mbps (wired), along with the GFiber Wi-Fi 6E Router (which allows for up to 1600 Mbps over Wi-Fi) and up to two Mesh Extenders for strong whole home Wi-Fi coverage and, as always, unlimited data, professional installation, and access to GFiber’s highly rated 24/7 customer service.

You may be wondering why it’s taken us about a year to bring 8 Gig to Kansas City when it was one of the original cities to get 5 Gig in 2023 while other cities have gotten 8 Gig sooner. KC is our largest market — so supporting 8 Gig speeds across our entire service area required us to touch infrastructure across every part of the Kansas City metro area. This is great news not just for our newest 8 Gig customers, but for all our KC customers (and in other cities too), because it means that GFiber’s network is set up to support rising demand for more speed for years to come.

Kansas City has been on the forefront of internet speed since the very beginning, and it’s still very much on the fast track — sign up for 8 Gig here!

Google Fiber has deep roots in the Show Me State — we expanded across the border from Kansas City, Kansas, over a decade ago and currently serve many municipalities on both sides of the border. And we’re deepening our Missouri roots even further. Last night, the City of Jefferson City Council approved a right-of-way license agreement, allowing GFiber to begin construction of a fiber optic network in the city.

Jeff City has been laser focused on giving their residents more choice when it comes to fast, reliable internet, and GFiber is very excited to be a part of their vision for a connected future.

The first step in this process is engineering and permitting, and we’ll be getting to work on both of these tasks immediately. We plan to begin construction later this year, with the intention of connecting our first customers in Missouri’s capital city in 2025.

Jefferson City is GFiber’s first city in Central Missouri, and we plan to hire a small dedicated team to help serve our customers here. If you want to stay up to date on our progress and product availability, sign up here.

In September, Google Fiber announced that we are planning to bring fast, reliable internet to Bellevue, Nebraska. We’re currently in the planning process and intend to start construction this winter with the goal of starting to offer service to our first customers in the city by the middle of the year.

In Bellevue, we’re working with a new construction vendor for us — ALLO Fiber — to build our network. A Nebraska-based company, ALLO Fiber has connected residents in the state for the past 20 years, and is ready to hit the ground running. In fact, that’s why we’re able to start building the network so quickly — matching our fastest time from announcement to construction ever in Mesa, AZ! We’re looking forward to working together to bring GFiber’s award-winning internet service into homes across the city.

The City of Bellevue is committed to bringing better internet to their residents, and GFiber is looking forward to being a part of that connected future. We’re excited to be working with an innovative, like-minded local company to make it happen. We’ll continue to look for new ways to deliver quality internet services to communities ever more rapidly. Google Fiber is continuing to grow in the Carolinas! As we continue to build out our networks in Charlotte (CLT) and Research Triangle (RDU), we just announced our intention to build our first city in South Carolina – Tega Cay on beautiful Lake Wylie as we expand our service area in the greater Charlotte Metro area.

Earlier today, we joined SC Governor Henry McMaster, Mayor Chris Gray and many more new friends to celebrate the news. We expect to start construction in the Tega Cay area in early 2024 and serve our first customers there later in the year.

Thumbnail

Meanwhile, we’ve been busy in the Old North State, too. J.D. Power recently ranked us #1 in customer satisfaction in the South Region, and we’re working to set that bar even higher. We rolled out 5 Gig service in CLT and RDU, and 8 Gig in CLT (with RDU on the way later this year).

In Charlotte, we are expanding our reach to Concord and Huntersville. And in the Raleigh-Durham region, we’re adding Garner and Hillsborough while continuing to build out Durham, Chapel Hill/Carrboro, Apex, Raleigh and new neighborhoods in other existing cities.

As always, we’re working with local organizations to make an impact across the communities we serve, especially on digital equity and STEM education. In September, we joined CLT’s E2D (Eliminate the Digital Divide) to send 1,000 kids back to school equipped with refurbished laptops.

In keeping with our strong commitment to the FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), we’ve added a new service plan for ACP participants. 300 Meg provides symmetrical uploads and downloads of up to 300 mbps for $30 a month. With the government subsidy, this product is available at no cost to eligible customers. Google Fiber was founded on the ideal of giving more people access to fast, reliable internet at an accessible price – and ACP delivers just that.

And we’re not slowing down. As we continue to expand our network to more of the Carolinas, we are revved up and ready to do great things across these communities.
