The Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands has announced plans to declare an additional 166,000 km2 of No-Take zones within the GSGSSI Marine Protected Area. This is an area 8 times the size of Wales. Sustainable fisheries are already strictly regulated in the Maritime Zone. With these additional protections, 449,000 km2 of biodiverse waters (36% of the total area) will be completely closed to all fishing activity.

Another exciting collaboration with our friends the British Antarctic Survey, deploying and retrieving some of their autonomous craft from the GSGSSI fisheries patrol vessel: Pharos SG
You might have noticed we've started using quite a few autonomous vehicles. Well, here's another! ⛵ Meet Sailbuoy, deployed for the first time in South Georgia waters in January. Important science near South Georgia includes monitoring keystone species like krill, and this data is used in ecosystems science and in regulating sustainable fishing. The Sailbuoy was able to collect this data, as well as water sampling, on its three-day solo mission. Tussock, Albatross and Icebergs! All the components needed for a perfect sub-Antarctic summer. This stunning photograph was taken by the #GSGSSI team currently undertaking a dedicated expedition to survey the wandering albatross populations across South Georgia. This critical work to understand population trends has been made possible through the generous support of the South Georgia Heritage Trust, FRIENDS OF SOUTH GEORGIA ISLAND and the Antarctic Research Trust.
