Starting with understanding the root cause of why and what is affecting the person can help uncover the layers and create a more effective plan of action to control distractions. Strategies to deal with distractions can be tailored as per the client, however it would be helpful to track and check-in regularly with them. Along with this, time outside and a digital detox every now and then could help. For your client to be motivated, words of encouragement can enthuse them with intrinsic motivation.

Distraction often signals deeper issues within our bodies and minds. As a coach, I encourage clients to tune into their bodies and identify where they feel the distraction. If it's in the stomach, we explore changes in eating habits or stress levels. If it's in the brain, we examine thought patterns and mental overload. Distraction can also be linked to emotions, serving as a defense mechanism against uncomfortable feelings. Mapping these sensations helps clients uncover root causes and then through questions help the client find what activities they believe would help them most. Deep down people know what they need to do, a coach only helps them find the way forward.

To help your client regain motivation and focus, start by identifying the key sources of distraction. Implement the "Pomodoro Technique" – work in 25-minute bursts with 5-minute breaks to enhance productivity. Encourage setting specific, achievable goals and creating a clutter-free workspace. Suggest using apps like "Focus@Will" for background concentration music and "Forest" to limit phone use. Regularly reviewing progress can also boost motivation. Lastly, remind them that, as Albert Einstein once said, "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration" – sometimes, structured effort is all it takes to overcome distractions.

Distraction is only a symptom; the underlying issue may be that we are in the wrong place. The best way to focus is to let go of things we don't like and pursue what we truly enjoy. When we are passionate, focus comes naturally and effortlessly.
-
First, identify the root cause. Are they distracted because they have too much on their plate? Do they have a loud/disruptive workspace? Or, are they no longer interested in their work? Based on this, suggest strategies that address the root cause such as time blocking, change of venue, new boundaries, and/or more exploratory exercises around purpose and meaning. The solution MUST be catered to the individual client - no single practice will work for everyone.
