The choice is to either: 1) explain in detail why you didn't hit the deadline; or 2) just own up to the fact that you didn't (no long explanation why), and explain how you'll fix it. Taking complete ownership is key to rebuilding confidence. Taking complete ownership is a sign of strength. And explaining how you'll fix it, is a sign of an action taker. Both are in short demand these days. Do these two things when you make a mistake and you'll see confidence rebuild.

This is something you can do on your own or, better yet, with the help of your boss or a mentor. Remember, the way you conduct yourself after a mistake shows your character. Use this as an opportunity to show who you are and how you roll. The key is to keep calm and retain your composure.
