This was the core question addressed in the fourth panel of last Fall’s  AD2S conference cycle, titled: “The Aerospace Operational Support Services: An Innovative Actor in Sustainable Development.” From the environmental resilience of air bases to energy efficiency, resource conservation, and the digital circular economy, leading voices from France’s military MRO ecosystem—including the French Air and Space Force, the SIAé, Dassault Aviation, Sopra Steria, and Sabena Technics—shared insights into the evolving role of military MRO in achieving climate goals without compromising mission-critical performance. 🚁 Preparing for High-Intensity Military Maintenance: Key Insights from the AD2S Panel 🌍 The second panel of the AD2S conferences, "Preparing for Conflict: Economy of Aerospace Operational Support Services," shed light on the evolving challenges and innovative strategies in military MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) in France. Here are the key takeaways: 1️⃣ Dual-Use Industrial Base Olivier Tillier of Airbus Helicopters highlighted the importance of leveraging a dual-use industrial base to optimize maintenance and improve fleet availability. This model fosters collaboration between civil and military sectors, ensuring a robust supply chain that can scale in times of crisis. Additionally, both Airbus Helicopters and Dassault Aviation stress the need for modernized repair manuals and enhanced cooperation between manufacturers, the DGA, and SIAé. 2️⃣ Regulatory Flexibility for Combat Readiness The urgent need to adapt maintenance strategies for high-intensity warfare was emphasized by Sébastien Fabre of Sopra Steria. Digital solutions, like predictive maintenance and 3D digitization for combat damage repair, play a pivotal role in reducing aircraft downtime and optimizing resource use. Moving away from rigid airworthiness standards to a “combat MPD” (Maintenance Planning Document) could drive more efficient, risk-adjusted maintenance practices. 3️⃣ National Autonomy in MRO To face the demands of high-intensity conflict, the panelists agreed that national autonomy in MRO is critical. The DGA is already working on reversing offshoring trends, with 50 relocation projects in France aimed at strengthening the defense industrial base and reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. As Emeric Tamboise from Thales pointed out, maintaining high-performance capabilities in these challenging times requires a cultural shift towards operational risk management. 💡 These discussions are paving the way for more resilient, agile, and innovative MRO strategies—critical for ensuring military readiness in the face of evolving global threats. 🎖️ L'ANFEM au service des familles et des blessés militaires L'Association nationale des femmes de militaires (ANFEM) était présente au salon AD2S pour représenter ses 60 délégations actives à travers la France. Nous avons eu la chance de rencontrer Anne Laurent, présidente régionale de l'ANFEM du Sud-Ouest, qui a partagé la mission essentielle de l'association : soutenir les familles des Armées et les militaires blessés. ✨ Deux volets structurent l'action de l'ANFEM : 1️. L’accueil : un soutien moral et humain pour les familles, au travers d'activités, de rencontres et d'échanges. 2️. La maintenance de nos avions : transformation et culture du risque. Nos avions doivent pouvoir décoller "en masse" et de façon très réactive. Pour cela, ils doivent être disponibles, armés et dans la bonne configuration. La clé de la réussite : une maintenance technique réactive et performante. Les politiques de maintenance de nos avions d’État ont beaucoup évolué. À partir de 2005, nous nous sommes adaptés aux normes de la navigabilité pour plus de sécurité aérienne. Dans les années 2010, les marchés dits "verticalisés" ont fait leur apparition avec une gestion de la performance confiée à un industriel unique pour chaque flotte. Aujourd’hui, une nouvelle évolution est indispensable pour retrouver une culture de maintenance plus proche du "temps de guerre". L’enjeu est de tendre vers un maintien en condition opérationnelle (MCO) aéronautique plus flexible, en ayant les moyens de sortir du cadre normatif, quand la nécessité nous y oblige. Nos forces doivent retrouver l'expertise du MCO de combat : il s'agit d'être capable de peser le risque à prendre au regard de l’enjeu opérationnel, afin de rester dans le tempo des opérations. La performance des opérations aériennes est intimement liée à la maintenance de nos moyens, à notre capacité de prendre des risques maîtrisés et à le faire rapidement.
