🌟 What if you decided to change careers...and realised your previous career was just a foundation for the new one all along! 🚀 Well that’s what I realised when I decided to switch from translation to web development. All this time learning foreign languages prepared me for learning programming languages too! Here are some examples of how: 📝 Structure & Formatting Both foreign languages and programming languages have set structures that need to be learnt and applied correctly. 🔤 Vocabulary Foreign languages use different words to convey meaning so we learn their vocabulary to help us communicate, while programming languages use different keywords and function constructions to convey their semantics. 🧩 Pattern recognition For foreign languages, grammar rules often follow set patterns, which we learn to recognise when we read or hear them. It’s also important to recognise patterns in code to learn and understand concepts in different languages or frameworks. 🏋️♂️ Practice When we start learning a foreign language, we can be shy or frustrated, as we want to be able to communicate effectively from the beginning. We gain fluency by practising regularly and being brave enough to speak, even when we know we’ll make mistakes. The same applies to coding: practice makes perfect! ⏳ Patience As we practice we need to be patient and give ourselves room to make mistakes. Mistakes are inevitable, but how we deal with them and learn from them makes all the difference. 🌱 Adaptability I’ve heard it said that once you’ve mastered a foreign language, it’s easier to learn another one and I totally agree. In the same way, I’ve found that everything you learn about one programming language can help you understand another one. In summary, learning languages and programming have a lot in common, which has helped me transition from one career to another. Do you think there are other similarities between learning languages and code? And what about you, what’s your career change journey been like? Has your old job helped you learn a new one? #ReconversionProfessionnelle #CareerChange #ProfessionalDevelopment #CodingJourney #WebDevelopment #CareerInsights #LifelongLearning #SkillsTransfer
