Le fonds dédié aux startup studios
À propos
The French Tech Acceleration team within BPI France’s Innovation Division is dedicated to investing in start-up support structures such as accelerators and startup studios. Our current strategy is to primarily focus on supporting start-up studios initiatives, especially those operating in deeptech sectors (Greentech, Medtech, Biotech, Cybersecurity, Quantum systems etc…) which require significant capital needs. Deeptech startup studios aim to create high potential start-up developing disruptive technologies mainly resulting from the research work of public laboratories. In addition, we also support other growth sectors like construction sector, industry 4.0 or e-health. With 300M€ under management, we co-invest up to 50% of the rounds, with tickets from 1M€ to 10M€. The current portfolio is composed of 7 accelerators: 1Kubator, Axeleo, Héméra, Hook Invest, Schoolab, The Refiners and Wesprint, and 5 startup studios: Alacrité, Imagination Machine, MD Start II, Quatroccento and Technofounders. 📢🚀 Find out more about Kanopee – from the French Tech Accélération Fund Portfolio. Founded at the end of 2021 by Renaud Sornin and Nicolas BARBET, Kanopee is a venture studio based in Lyon, which focuses on PropTech and the Trusted Third-party sector. Renaud Sornin has worked 20 years in the sector (notably at Bouygues Construction), 10 of which as the cofounder and CEO of OFA Attestation Légale, which was acquired in 2022 by its British counterpart Fortius Construction Line to form the Once For All group. In 2018, he launched a venture building activity within OFA, which enabled the development of 10 startups. After the acquisition, Renaud partnered with Nicolas Barbet (ex-sales director at OFA) to launch Kanopee, a venture builder with an initial 7-startup portfolio (all spun off from OFA), and accelerate the construction industry’s digitalization. The operating team has since been joined by Romain BENOIT (ex-CEO France at OFA) and Gloria López Montiel (ex-Product Manager at OFA) as partners in 2024. Kanopee raised 11M€ in 2023 among 36 investors to create and develop a dozen startups in 5 years. To operate the studio, they work with a robust and committed ecosystem comprised of corporates like SMABTP, OFA Group, PARIS-OUEST CONSTRUCTION, and small local SMEs (which all are Kanopee’s LPs). At the same time, the two cofounders launched the endowment fund Kanopee Partage to support the construction sector’s transition and projects with high environmental and societal impact. The venture builder leads a dedicated industrial community with which it has leveraged its trademark “pioneers method” to create and accelerate 17 startups, among which: - Subclic (2017) develops a subcontracting management SaaS for SMEs in the construction industry. The platform has 50,000 daily users and 40,000 companies have already subscribed. - Lowit (2020) contributes to tertiary buildings’ energy transition with a Saas for energy efficiency. - Conformitee (2019) raised 1,5M€ (among Bpifrance, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, and Crédit Agricole Centre-est) to develop a trusted third-party SaaS for standardized KYC, and has become the first French “RegTech”. - Cygogn (2021) leverages AI to develop the digitalization of administrative work through email automation. - BLIC (2021) built a solution to simplify deliveries on construction and industrial sites. With its intelligent delivery box, Blic addresses both efficiency and ecological issues on site. 90% of startups fail. (Venture Studios even the odds) Common reasons include: - No product-market fit - Running out of cash - Weak founding teams - Scaling too soon - Poor execution But this is where Venture Studios are rewriting the rules. What makes them different? 1. Built-in expertise Venture studios bring in seasoned operators who’ve built and scaled before. 2. Shared resources From legal to HR to marketing — everything is ready to go. 3. Data-driven validation Ideas are pressure-tested before they hit the market. 4. Founder support Founders aren’t starting alone. They’re co-building with experts. 5. Reduced risk Failures are anticipated early, minimizing time and financial loss. Venture studios don’t just launch startups. They create ecosystems where startups thrive. P.S. I’m sharing daily Venture Studio insights, stats, and resources every weekday (MON-FRI 7:30AM EST) Make sure to follow (Matthew Burris) if you’d like to learn more about studios
