We are very grateful to be invited by The Superyacht Report to contribute to this article about superyacht captain's leadership development. BZ Maritime Leadership aims to enhance 'Human Capability' across superyachting, as it is a critical enabler for the future success of the industry. Embedding a professional leadership culture in the industry is fundamental to achieving this, and we welcome being alongside and working to upskill captains, HODs, crew, shoreside leaders and staff. The superyacht industry is a worldwide premium brand, and the people who fund it, understandably, expect exceptional service and safety. To achieve this, the workforce requires a high level of 'Human Capability,' and this doesn't just happen by chance. It needs buy-in from the key stakeholders and investment in training and development. Not investing brings risk, whereas the rewards for getting 'Human Capability' right are high (better service, safety, increased profits). The workforce will also benefit greatly, with a better working culture, that inspires professional fulfilment and personal happiness. From our perspective, we are optimistic that awareness and attitudes to change are moving in a positive direction. Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) research has found that work now occupies a less central place in people's lives with an increasing proportion of employees feeling that a job is ‘just a way of earning money’. This transactional view of work could be a concern for organisations, as most have traditionally relied on employees' loyalty and discretionary effort' as an unwritten contract of work. Of more concern however is for the maritime and superyacht industries, as this transactional view of employment does not fit with life at sea. Could this transactional attitude towards work therefore be a growing factor in why it is proving difficult to attract and retain high-calibre officers and crew? This 'transaction approach' to employment is emerging from wider societal factors and influences, and so the maritime and superyacht industries do not have the means to counter it directly. Therefore, a convincing case needs to be made to encourage people that a career at sea is worthwhile and valued. Whilst this is easier said than done, one thing is for certain, it will require some innovative and transformational LEADERSHIP! D-Day at sea: Operation Neptune On 6 June 1944, two naval task forces landed over 132,000 ground troops on the beaches of Normandy as part of Operation Neptune, the seaborne invasion of northern France which made D-Day possible. Operation Neptune was the naval component of Operation Overlord: the codename for the Allied invasion of northwest Europe to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. Nearly 7,000 vessels took part in the landings on the five Normandy beaches. Given our nautical heritage, the team BZ Maritime Leadership wishes to highlight the tremendous skill, determination, and courage of seafarers who made the operation a success. Many suffered horrific injuries or were killed, and some carried, often hidden, mental scars for the rest of their lives. It may be 80 years ago, but the sacrifice and achievement, of both military and civilian seafarers, on that day should never be underestimated or forgotten. More than 1300 lives were saved during a difficult day in March 2019. Today, I am thinking of my close colleague and very good friend, Captain Bengt Gustafsson who together with his crew, Norwegian coastal pilots, and Norwegian rescue helicopter crews were able to save the M/S Viking Sky which came within a ship length of crashing stern first upon the rocky Norwegian coast at 4 knots. With all power lost, and no immediate indication of the underlying cause (later determined to be a deficiency in the engineering design of the ship); Captain Gustafsson, immediately initiated the Mayday call, deployed his anchors and asked one of the Norwegian pilots to maintain communication with the Norwegian Rescue Coordination Centre for the helicopter evacuation of the passengers (deploying the lifeboats in this rough weather would not have been safe). The ensuing hours stand as a textbook example that will be taught to seafarers in years to come. The Viking Sky is a Norwegian flag vessel that was operating in the Norwegian territorial sea, so why the puzzling inaction of the Norwegian State with respect to recognizing the exemplary actions of their Maritime Rescue Coordinating Center, the helicopter crews, the Norwegian coastal pilots, Captain Gustafsson, and the crew of the Viking Sky?
