[AWARD] Congratulations to Laurent Xu on his “Best Poster Contribution” at MAM 2024! 👏   Laurent, a #PhD #student, has made significant advancements in p-GaN contacts. His work is contributing to the development of more efficient and powerful #microelectronics.   “𝘋𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘯𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭.”   Contacts are an essential building block in a microchip. They are the connectors that enable components to communicate between each other. As a result, their efficiency and cost are important factors in the overall value chain. #GaN was initially developed for optoelectronics, but in recent decades, it has been gaining traction in the field of high power/high frequency applications.   Building on the know-how and ecosystem of CEA-Leti research, Laurent was able to develop a new process for GaN contacts known as Pre-Amorphization Implantation (PAI). “𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘢𝘕 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰𝘱. [PRESS] Piezoelectrics Going Beyond Energy Harvesting While piezoelectrics are often associated with energy harvesting, emerging research is expanding their potential in power conversion technologies, driving efficiency and innovation in multiple industries. ⚡   💡 CEA-Leti’s researchers have recently paved the way to isolating piezoelectric converters without transformers with a new topology of dual-bridge isolated piezoelectric resonator converter (DB-IPRC) that provides isolation using two independent piezoelectric resonators. This novel topology addresses efficiency issues that have previously limited transformer-free converter designs.   🔌 The improved version of the DC-DC converter significantly improves efficiency, while maintaining the converter isolation principle. This breakthrough builds on earlier research that introduced a new way of converting electrical power using piezoelectric resonators and developing a dual-bridge piezoelectric resonator converter.   The results were reported in a paper, “Switching Assisting Circuit Improving the Efficiency of DC-DC Converters Based on Piezoelectric Resonators”, presented this summer at PCIM Europe 2024. 📃   The paper notes that “for a 200 V to 120 V conversion, the converter shows an efficiency of 96.2 percent with the inductive assisting circuit, 94.3 percent with the piezoelectric one and 87.4 percent without any assisting circuit. The (piezoelectric resonator) assisting circuit offers a gain in efficiency over a smaller operating range than the inductance, but leads to a flatter converter.”   💬 The use of piezoelectric resonators instead of inductors in power conversion “𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴,” explained Ghislain Despesse, a co-author of the PCIM paper.“𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘺𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴. [NEWS] A research team from CEA-Leti earned a presentation slot at #ISPSD 2024 for their pioneering work on the characterization of #silicon carbide (SiC) devices. This recognition by the highly selective conference, renowned as a global reference in semiconductor power devices, highlights the excellence of SiC R&D carried out at the institute. The selected paper presents an innovative method for characterizing #SiC diodes and their design in order to assess their stability and robustness. Specifically, the aim was to determine—for two types of diode technology—the variation in avalanche voltage and reverse leakage current before and after the application of avalanche stress. “𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴," explains Ahmad Abbas. “𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘴, 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘴." This marks a significant difference, as conventional methods typically focus more on component reliability studies within packages.
