❄️As climate change brings unpredictable rains and rising temperatures, farmers in India, like those in Rayanpet, face growing challenges. Rice yields are impacted, but agricultural research is offering hope. Organizations like ICRISAT are developing climate-resilient seeds that can withstand drought, heat, and diseases. These innovations are essential for ensuring food security in India and globally. However, experts emphasize the need for better access to these seeds and proper farmer training. 🌿Pigeon pea plays a vital role in Kenya's food security, especially in arid regions, thanks to its drought resilience. The country produces around 107,117 tons annually, but demand still outpaces supply. CGIAR’s African Dryland Crops Improvement Network (ADCIN) has identified three key market segments based on seed duration and color. Efforts are underway to improve traits like yield, disease resistance, and cooking time while also addressing market needs. The next phase will gather input from farmers, consumers, and traders to boost the value of pigeon pea production. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dXfGJf_m #FoodSecurity #Agriculture

Uganda’s rice mills are significantly underutilized, operating at just 47% capacity. This low efficiency increases costs and limits the competitiveness of domestically produced rice, making it harder for local farmers to compete with imports. However, recent research highlights interesting opportunities to address these challenges. By investing in better breeding strategies and improved rice varieties, such as WITA 9, which can thrive in both irrigated and upland ecologies, the sector can significantly enhance mill efficiency. Breeding programs aligned with millers’ preferences and market demands hold the potential to drive higher capacity utilization, reduce costs, and boost domestic rice production in Uganda. This research, presented in the latest Market Intelligence Brief, provides vital insights into how aligning breeding with market needs can reshape Uganda's rice value chain for better competitiveness. 🌾📈 Access the full brief here: https://bit.ly/4dOqIVo
