I'm really excited about this talk on algorithmic transparency at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) on October 30. This research short-stay at LSE is financed by CIVICA, and I also thank Ayşe Gizem Yaşar for organizing the event! The idea is to explore regulatory challenges and incentives associated with “algorithmic transparency.” As we know, the legal notion of transparency has become a key point in recent regulatory frameworks for technology, often touted as a solution to concerns accountability and oversight. My aim, however, is to highlight that the concept carries several interpretations, which can differ between legal, technological, and regulatory contexts—particularly within European fora. So the idea is to examine how transparency functions (or fails to function) in the real-world application of complex technologies such as AI and algorithms. How can European University Alliances advance gender equality in higher education? This week, CIVICA was honored to participate in the Horizon 2020 project RESET I Redesigning Equality and Scientific Excellence Together at Universidade do Porto. The event provided a valuable platform for academic leaders from across Europe, including UNIC (European University of Cities in Post-Industrial Transition) and the EUGLOH University Alliance, to exchange ideas and best practices on fostering gender equality in academia. Discussions focused on how European university alliances can work together to address persistent gender gaps and drive systemic change across higher education institutions. A special thanks to our distinguished speakers for their contributions: Aleksandra Rożalska, Head of the Women's Studies Centre, Uniwersytet Łódzki, representing UNIC Joana Resende, Vice-Rector, Universidade do Porto, representing EUGLOH Violette Toye, General Secretary of the Gender Studies Programme, Sciences Po representing CIVICA Collaboration at events like this strengthens our collective commitment to building a more inclusive academic landscape across Europe. 🚀 Exciting News! I am thrilled to announce that I have been awarded a grant by CIVICA for my new collaborative research project titled "Using Machine Learning to Uncover Subjective Incentives in Executive Compensation" in collaboration with Juan Pedro Gomez (IE University), Konstantina Valogianni (IE University), and Mariya N Ivanova (Stockholm School of Economics). This project aims to bridge a critical gap in corporate governance research by leveraging advanced AI, NLP, and Machine Learning techniques to extract and analyze subjective incentives from firms' financial disclosures. By focusing on the nuanced aspects of executive compensation—such as strategic priorities, cultural values, and governance practices—this research will provide new insights into the alignment of executive incentives with corporate strategies. A huge thanks to CIVICA and Università Bocconi for supporting this my research! #AI #NLP #MachineLearning #AccountingAnalytics #CorporateGovernance #Research #ExecutiveCompensation

The #EAIE2024 was as inspiring as always, this time held in the fantastic city of Toulouse. We presented our poster representing Central European University and our amazing alliance, CIVICA. Besides the conference it is always a pleasure to meet colleagues in person, outside of the virtual world.
