🌍 Celebrating 30 Years of Precise Altimetry! 🌊 💡 This year marks the 30th anniversary of precise altimetry, a major milestone in Earth observation. To celebrate, the European Space Agency - ESA, in collaboration with our parent company, the French Space Agency (CNES), hosted the "30 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry" symposium this week in Montpellier, France. 👨👩 As a global leader in altimetry, CLS is proud to have 42 of our experts giving 28 talks and also presenting numerous posters showcasing our expertise in data qualification and sea level products for the international scientific community. 🛰 With over 30 years of experience in processing, calibrating, and validating altimetry data, CLS has developed unique processing chains that provide critical data to scientists, climatologists, oceanographers, biologists, and hydrologists worldwide. These insights help calculate ocean, lake, and river levels, as well as address key environmental challenges like: 📈 Monitoring global Mean Sea Level rise, a key global warming indicator (in partnership with LEGOS and CNES) 💧 Tracking inland water resources, including surface, depth, and flow of water networks. ❄️ Observing ice sheet dynamics and their impacts on sea level rise. 🌊 Identifying areas at risk of coastal flooding. 👏 A huge congratulations to our team for their contributions this week, representing the 120+ dedicated individuals at CLS who work daily to advance these crucial activities. A synergy of University of Maine and CLS expertise in materials science, buoy systems and offshore operations allowed the development of the very first unit of our DeepCLiDAR, Carbon Trust Stage 2 certified and now embarked on an industrial mode on the premises of our susbsidiary CLS Southern Africa.    This investment in renewables is a key part of CLS’s strategic plan through 2030, demonstrating our deep commitment to supporting offshore wind. 🤝 Last month, CLS hosted the bi-annual SALP review meeting at our headquarters in Toulouse. 🛰 Since the early 90s, activities related to altimetry-based sea level measurements have been spearheaded by CNES, the French Space Agency. For over 20 years, the SALP project has overseen these crucial activities. 🌊 CLS has been integral to this project from the start, designing processing chains, ensuring instrument expertise, qualifying data, and providing sea level products for the international scientific community. 📈 With over 120 team members and 11 satellite missions spanning 30 years, our collaboration with CNES and LEGOS allows us to calculate the Mean Sea Level rise, a vital global warming indicator. 🎣 More than 1,200 boats equipped with NEMO in #England 🛰️ Since 2003, European fishing vessels over 12 meters have been using a satellite surveillance system. In 2013, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) proposed to extend this surveillance to vessels of less than 12 meters along the English coast. 🌊 The #IVMS system, which has been compulsory in English waters since April 2024, already equips more than 80% of vessels, thanks to the European Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), which financed this ambitious project. Under this program, 1,200 boats in 190 harbors in England have been fitted with #NEMO transmitter, since its certification in November 2021 by the MMO. 💡 Powered by solar energy, NEMO is specially designed for monitoring coastal and small-scale fisheries. Featuring hybrid GPRS/IoT connectivity in coastal areas, and satellite connectivity when the vessel is moving offshore, NEMO offers global coverage for the fisherman. 🤩 Committed to fisheries authorities and #fishermen, we are proud of this great success in the United Kingdom and thank the MMO for its trust.
