The meeting will feature presentations, case studies, and breakout discussions, providing participants the opportunity to compare approaches to refinement and share best practices. The event will bring together scientists, veterinarians, animal facility managers, technologists, and other professionals to share insights and strategies, with a focus on research fields such as #neuroscience, #cancer, and #cardiovascular research. Last week Belgium where I’ve been asked to assess an institutional #Animal #Ethics #Committee (UCB ethics committee at #Braine Campus). One of the most outstanding I’ve ever seen! Very comprehensive system, uncompromising ethical standards, fully integrated, and driven by an engaged team! Grateful of the great chance and experience for me. The objective was to look at the #performance of the missions of the Ethics committee and to seek for improved interactions with the Animal Welfare Body (#AWB) and the #Research teams. Interesting to point out that those who have strong #values and a #culture of #excellence are still looking for topics for improvement. Thursday, I moderated a workshop on One Welfare at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. Very interesting #dialogue with the #animal team. This workshop aimed to create a supportive and resilient environment for professionals working with laboratory animals. Participants explored animal #care, emotional well-being, and ethical challenges through interactive discussions. When preparing the module on Retrospective Assessment of projects, I’ve realized that the focus of the Ethics Committee / #IACUC have mainly been on the prospective analysis (what is expected? What could happen?) and the ethical review process in order to authorize the use of animals for scientific purpose. Up to now, the retrospective analysis has been less a priority or not a formal process for ethics committees and competent authorities. The ethical assessment is instrumental prior to any use of animals by a multidisciplinary team. The retrospective analysis of animal use appears to be as important as -even more than- the prospective exercise. The look-back assessment is based on real data: the positive and negative outputs of the scientific project, the harm/distress of animals during the experiments, the number of animals and their faith, all 3Rs intiatives implemented during the course of the in vivo project. I’ve lectured at the seminar of #animal #welfare officers of a global company. The talk on the Culture of Care, #3Rs and corporate #indicators of performance was set to be challenging and stimulates the discussion amongst the #AWO team: how to envision the strategic development for better care and full implementation of the 3Rs. A preliminary questionnaire has been sent to get anonymous feedback on the current situation.
