✏️ Many have questions about key import, export, and deletion. We’ve written a blog post to share our thoughts and approach on this topic. Over the past year, we’ve seen a surge in the use of Dfns’ key import, export, and archiving features. These are not recent additions—they’ve been part of our offering for quite some time. What’s changed is our understanding of how to use them securely and the risks to be aware of. 💡 Why should you care? Because it’s not just about moving keys around—it’s about the complex interplay of security, compliance, and governance that’s often overlooked. ⏬ Key import: Thinking about bringing your own keys into Dfns? It may seem flexible, but there’s a risk. Keys generated outside our secure environment can have hidden vulnerabilities. Just like firearms in regulated trading, keys shouldn’t be imported without strict oversight. If you’re not ready to manage the risks, you could be inviting trouble. ⏫ Key export: Want to move your keys out of Dfns? You’re in control, but remember, this shifts the security responsibility to you. Once exported, you’re on your own. It’s like driving without insurance—are you prepared for that risk? 🚮 Key archiving: True key deletion? It’s a myth. You can’t guarantee that a key is fully erased from every possible location when adopting a zero trust mindset. That’s why we archive keys instead—storing them in a way that makes unauthorized access near impossible. 🔍 Introducing “Know Your Key” (KYK): With these features comes responsibility. Our “Know Your Key” (KYK) framework provides a complete cryptographic audit trail, ensuring every key’s lifecycle is transparent and traceable. Whether it’s for regulatory compliance, operational clarity, or just peace of mind, KYK has you covered. ⚠️ Beware of vendor lock-ins! We built key import, export, and archiving to prevent this. Many wallet providers, especially so-called “non-custodial” ones (e.g. Web3Auth, Privy, Magic) restrict these key management capabilities, limiting flexibility and stifling growth. At Dfns, we focus on open systems that offer choice, allowing organizations to switch providers and avoid vendor lock-ins. Bottom line: Dfns is committed to setting new standards for key management. These aren’t just “features”—they are foundational tools for navigating the complex, evolving landscape of digital finance with confidence. Lockness is alive! 🐉 We’re proud to unveil Lockness, a Dfns-led initiative that brings together state-of-the-art public key protocols, digital signatures and data storage technology under LF Decentralized Trust, formerly known as the Hyperledger Foundation. 🎯 Lockness is more than just another project—it's a major leap for key management technology. In partnership with The Linux Foundation, Dfns has created a trusted space to collaborate and advance research and development in open-source public key cryptography. We believe modern cryptography like multi-party computation (MPC) brings tremendous benefits. Our goal is to help companies and institutions around the world adopt these solutions faster. 🔒 Although MPC holds great promise, its adoption has been slow due to a lack of trusted standards and industry caution. Lockness aims to change that. By bringing together academic experts, companies, and auditors, we're creating the first trusted and compliant open-source cryptography ecosystem designed to meet the needs and standards of regulated industries like finance. As part of our commitment, we are contributing our technology to the foundation of Lockness. Our research team has spent years developing advanced MPC protocols, designed and reviewed by top cryptographers and engineers, including Jonathan Katz, Nigel Smart, Chelsea Komlo, Antoine Urban, Denis Varlakov, and Nikita Sorokovikov. Today, this technology is available to everyone. Dfns believes that the future of cryptographic security lies in collaboration and open-source development.
