4️⃣ 0️⃣ YEARS: Episode 11 40 years of GALIA labels More than any other object, labels are a marker of our association’s achievements. In such a way that in many plants these little pieces of paper, so outdated, so useful, are associated with our acronym: “What is written on the GALIA?“ The various ETI label standards in French and OTL – Odette Transport Label – in their versions taken up by Odette in English, have enabled the handling, storage and use of billions of products, packaged in different forms: Transport Handling Unit, homogeneous or heterogeneous, Packaging Unit, sheet metal coil, individual product, in both series and after-sales logistics flows. The label is a brick within a coherent whole made up of the logistics operating modes of the automobile industry and the means used. Beyond the standardisation of dimensions, printing masks, the data contained, printing quality standards, the weight of the paper to be respected… labels are inseparable from the industrial exploitation of barcodes, allowing the labels to be “flashed” and paired with the data transmitted by EDI, or contained in information systems. During our work, the label standards have benefited from some minor developments: precisions, visual identification of Right or Left part, possibility of integrating a globally unique identification number, possibility of associating the label with an RFID tag… But ultimately what characterises best the label standards is their remarkable stability, proof of their efficiency and their ability to provide the expected services. Now, we are considering a paperless world! And yet the paradox is that the future of the ETI, OTL (and VDA) label standards is in fact another label: the GTL – Global Transport Label – supporting a 2D Datamatrix format barcode and offering customisation options for Customers or Suppliers. This standard is deployed according to opportunities, often greenfield projects or harmonization of labels of the n tiers of the supply chain. In an era of automation, AutoID systems, digital twins… the persistence of the paper label is also the indicator that sooner or later in our industrial processes, a human still needs to see or read crucial information from scratch. 4️⃣ 0️⃣ YEARS: Episode 10 40 years of Engineering Standards at GALIA Starting shortly after our inception, we've been actively involved in fostering the exchange of product data (CAD, PLM, metrology, etc.) to support automotive industry digital engineering. These efforts have complemented our existing portfolio of logistics and commercial exchange standards. 📌 Global Standards Very few engineering standards are GALIA specific: from the beginning, we have worked at a global level, collaborating with international partners such as AIAG - Automotive Industry Action Group (USA), JAMA JAPIA (Japan), Odette Sweden, and German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) (Germany) under the Strategic AutomotiveProductDataStandards Industry Group (SASIG). 📌 A Comprehensive portfolio for Automotive industry Our standards cover a wide range of applications, including: ◾ Facilitating PLM interoperability: Our standards enable seamless data exchange between different PLM systems, covering areas such as third-party exchanges, electronic technical data messages, and 2D/3D/mixed visualization data. ◾ Enhancing PLM processes: We've developed standards such as change management, long-term archiving, and more. 📌 ISO Contributions Our experts have also contributed to two ISO STEP formats: AP 214 (ISO 10303-214) and STEP AP 242 (ISO 10303-242). These formats enable smooth data exchange and are widely adopted in leading CAD and PLM solutions. ✴️ Celebrating 40 years of engineering standards! They have had a significant impact on fostering collaborative engineering and improving development team performance within the extended enterprise. Are you part of this ecosystem? Whether you're a CAD/PLM user or vendor, or a member of an engineering team, you're likely using one of our standards. This anniversary is yours to celebrate! #EngineeringStandards #AutomotiveIndustry #Collaboration #PLM #CAD #ISO #SASIG
🌿 The “Green & Efficient Transport” group continues its work On September 17th, we had the pleasure of welcoming the members of the workgroup to a second face-to-face workshop, following the kick-off meeting in April. Let us recall that the stakes are high: decarbonizing the upstream and downstream transports of our companies. However, they often consider that this sector is second-rate compared to others, which may be a reality today, but not necessarily tomorrow. We must all be vigilant regarding the transport of goods, whose carbon emissions continue to increase. The participants have already shared their roadmap and their vision of the levers for decarbonization. Of course, this leads to very rich discussions, but also to the observation of differences in assessment that we are trying to understand. At this stage of our work, we are making progress in several areas: ✔ Identify the levers that can be used with the partners of the teams in charge of decarbonizing transport, so that some key processes in companies consider the reduction in the need for transport more systematically. ✔ List the technical levers, alternative fuels and methods for reducing the carbon footprint of transport by analyzing what the “market” will offer in the short, medium and long term. ✔ Discuss the difficult question of valuing carbon gains, so that this subject truly “weighs” in economic reports and decision making. Other themes are in preparation: ✔ Implement “full-scale” tests between participating companies, ultimately the best lever for learning… ✔ Evaluate the challenges of regulatory constraints, on the means that will be truly accessible in the long term, and their impact on the functioning of the automotive supply chain. The subject is certainly difficult, but exciting! The group has already signed the extension of its work in 2025. The opportunity to welcome new participants:
4️⃣ 0️⃣ YEARS: Episode 9 40 years of savings thanks to GALIA standards Are you aware of the savings you achieve by using one of the 150 GALIA standards, sometimes without even realizing it (EDI, Labels, Packaging, Logistics Processes, PLM and CAD data exchange, etc.)? For 40 years, these standards have been driving significant cost savings and efficiency gains in the automotive supply chain by : ➡ Avoiding having a multitude of different interfaces with your clients and suppliers. ➡ Minimizing the cost and lead time for new development when starting business if you’ve previously used our standards with another partner. Developed collaboratively with experts from our 200 member companies (car makers, equipment suppliers, and solution providers), GALIA standards ensure high performance and a solid network of partners who apply them. And they are harmonized with our international partners for interoperability through our connections with Odette International, SASIG, Catena-X, and others. So don’t hesitate: commit to standardization by adopting our standards. You can also contribute to their development, evolution, or simply get assistance by joining our association. And if you are one of the users of our standards, this 40th anniversary is yours. Let’s celebrate! See our standards: https://lnkd.in/ewXmx2e8 #Standards #AutomotiveSupplyChain #40years
📢 New GALIA project : NEW DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SUPPLY CHAIN AI, Machine Learning, IoT, Dataspaces…: these new technologies can significantly improve the supply chain. But beyond trends and initial POCs, what will our evolution look like? What techniques do we want to implement and what standardization is needed in the automotive industry? GALIA, a key player in the digitalization of the sector for 40 years, is launching a new working group to align industry needs with available technologies. The project aims to: 🎯 Share first experiences from members of the GALIA Community. 🎯 Inventory the use cases that these new technologies can address, complementing existing solutions. And as well map the issues that the current technologies can not solve. 🎯 Initiate potential standardization projects within GALIA. Business and IT experts are invited to participate collaboratively and non-competitively in this new working group. All GALIA member companies are welcome to join. 4️⃣ 0️⃣ YEARS: Episode 8 40 years of GALIA packaging Since the creation of GALIA, packaging has been the subject of joint work: thus, a first recommendation concerning pallets and boxes was published in 1986. 📌 Standard packaging Rapidly, the industry expressed a need for returnable packaging, which resulted in the definition of a range of plastic boxes. This was followed by packaging standards for sheet metal coils and slits, packaging for tires, and in 1999, an innovative standard for foldable plastic boxes as well as a foldable plastic pallet-box, then a metal sheet container, etc. Today, these solutions are still part of the “landscape” in our factories. 📌 Standardized packaging management No packaging, no supply chain! It was still necessary to propose management and information exchange methods allowing the supply chain partners to manage them efficiently. This was done through work at Odette level, concerning the operating modes and the structuring of EDI messages, from the end of the 90s. Towards the middle of the years 2010, new work went further in terms of managing empty packaging, in relation with the constraints of transporting empty packaging, up to Version 5.3 of AVIEXP in 2020, enabling the automation of the management of packaging accessories (Cover, pallet, empty dunnage box, etc.) in EDI messages. 📌 New societal challenges Fortunately, the automotive industry has implemented a strategy of reusable packaging (which all other industries envy us). This industrial, pragmatic and economical approach has made it possible to avoid mountains of waste in factories. But the devil is in the details. It was therefore necessary to continue working on good technical practices limiting waste or promoting the end of life of packaging. To date, the GALIA community is heavily involved in anticipating new regulatory constraints on the environment that impact the entire life cycle of packaging: eco-design of packaging, regulatory certification files, reuse targets, Extended Producer Responsibility, the second life of packaging or end-of-life waste management. In this 40th year of GALIA, a new recommendation has just been published to identify good (and not so good) practices for the Circular Economy of packaging: EMB20 - https://bit.ly/3X18Ekq #packaging #CircularEconomy #SupplyChain #AutomotiveIndustry
