[Techna 60th Anniversary Conference] Facing the Food Everest: are we ready? ‘𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘢'𝘴 𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸. 𝘞𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘵,’ said Sébastien ABIS at the start of the conference. 🏔️By 2050, the world's population will have reached 10 billion. The researcher likened this colossal challenge to a Food Everest, urging us to involve as many people as possible in food security, as never before in history. But not everyone is on the same side of the mountain & the climb is not a collective one. 🌍This Food Everest also means regenerating the planet. There can be no security without decarbonisation and sustainability, on a planet with limited resources. Christian HUYGHE highlighted the 9 planetary limits, 6 of which have now been exceeded, stressing the importance of having the right indicators. These constraints should be seen as benchmarks for driving forward a collective dynamic. 🤝To meet these challenges, Jerome LE ROY emphasised the importance of thinking about innovation on an international scale and encouraging collaboration between engineers, sales people and researchers. Sébastien Abis advocates a development model based on 5 pillars: competitiveness, risk management, sustainability, boldness and diversification, with an emphasis on the human factor. Ce défi colossal, le chercheur le compare à l’Everest alimentaire, nous exhortant à embarquer le plus de monde, comme jamais dans l’histoire, dans la sécurité alimentaire. Mais tout le monde n’est pas sur le même versant de la montagne & l’ascension ne se fait pas en mode collectif. 🌍Cet Everest alimentaire, c’est aussi régénérer la planète. Pas de sécurité sans décarbonation ni soutenabilité, dans une planète aux ressources limitées. Christian HUYGHE a mis en lumière ces 9 limites planétaires, dont 6 sont aujourd’hui dépassées, soulignant l'importance de disposer des bons indicateurs. Ces contraintes doivent être vues comme des repères pour impulser une dynamique collective. 🤝Pour relever ces défis, Jerome LE ROY a souligné l’importance de penser l’innovation à une échelle internationale et impulser des collaborations entre ingénieurs, commerciaux et chercheurs Sébastien Abis prône pour un modèle de développement basé sur 5 piliers : compétitivité, gestion des risques, durabilité, audace et diversification, insistant sur le facteur humain. Malgré cette sensation de vertige, il nous invite à cultiver l’ardeur joyeuse, associant la lucidité stratégique et l’enthousiasme collectif.

🐇[World Rabbit Congress 2024]: 𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗥𝗔𝗕𝗕𝗜𝗧 𝗕𝗘𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝗖𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗬𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗦 🎯This Techna study compared 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀 from 32 to 71 days old, 𝗶𝗻 𝟰 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: conventional cages, wired pens, floor pens with and without outside access. ✅ the main activity is “resting” (66% of animals), mainly followed by “feeding and drinking” (12%), “grooming” (9%) and “moving” (8%), regardless of housing systems and periods studied ✅ significant differences in behavior were measured according to the different housing systems ✅floor systems allow to satisfy some behavioral needs of rabbits but they seem to perform less 👉These findings should help to develop a 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱 more suitable to large groups including animal welfare and 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 as well as 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀.
