🍃 Carbon Literacy for Heritage Professionals 📚 The Preserving Legacies education team, including ICOMOS Climate Action Working Group Focal Point Will Megarry, delivered the 2nd Carbon Literacy Course for Heritage Professionals to participants from the National Monuments Service and the Office of Public Works in Dublin on 4 October. 💼 This course aimed to enhance participants' understanding of the human impact on #ClimateChange and to identify effective ways to respond to the challenges it poses. It explored the intersections between #CulturalHeritage and climate, and how culture, in turn, can play a role in addressing climate challenges. 🖊️ Climate literacy is a key element of the current ICOMOS triennial scientific plan, and is part of the Future of Our Pasts report (ICOMOS, 2018) recommendations: this course was designed directly in response to these calls for action. 👉 The 1st Carbon Literacy for Heritage Professionals course was held online by the Preserving Legacies education team on 17 September and involved ICOMOS members from over 35 countries. 📷 © Photographic Archive, National Monuments Service, Government of Ireland

ICOMOS World Heritage Transhumance Initiative Advances Through Strategic Networking and Collaborations 🌿 👥 The ICOMOS World Heritage Transhumance Initiative, supported by the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan , is gaining momentum through strategic cross-sectoral collaborations. Through elaborating the Thematic Approach to Transhumance heritage, the project aims to strengthen the capacity in preparing robust nominations of properties illustrative of transhumance heritage to the #WorldHeritage List and facilitate their representation in other relevant international programmes. 🤝 The kick-off discussion on 26 September 2024 gathered feedback from more than 30 archaeologists, ethnologists, anthropologists, agricultural economists, animal scientists, ecologists, planners, environmental biologists, livestock and rangelands, public health and landscape experts from various universities from around the world, as well as from national centres and institutes for scientific research of China, Ghana, France, Peru and Spain, from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Carpathian Convention. This network of professionals and academics, all with extensive experience in transhumance, provided a wealth of insights on material attributes of #TranshumanceHeritage, its values and traditional governance systems. Along with additional expert input, these contributions will shape the Thematic Approach to Transhumance Heritage, which will be the main project outcome in 2025. 👉 Since the launch of the project in July 2024, the ICOMOS team has held a series of constructive meetings with lead international institutions. These discussions have centred on fostering cross-sectoral synergies and identifying partnership opportunities for safeguarding transhumance heritage.

🗺️ To celebrate #WorldTourismDay, here are some updates on the 2022 ICOMOS International Charter for #CulturalHeritage Tourism! ⚖️ Since its adoption by the ICOMOS General Assembly in 2022, the International Cultural Tourism Charter has been incorporated into: ▫️ Rule II / Section 9 of the Philippines Heritage Law, Republic Act No. 11961 as a reference document. ▫️ The Management Plan of the Sierra de Tramuntana World Heritage Site in Mallorca and the upcoming Management Plan of the Historic Centre of Córdoba World Heritage Site (Spain). 👉 The ICHT Charter and the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee also played a key role in shaping the 2023 'How to apply ISO Standard 21902 Accessible tourism for all: recommendations for key players in the cultural tourism ecosystem', a significant UNWTO publication that aims to promote people-centred approaches and universal access within #CulturalTourism practices. 👉 Additionally, the Charter is the main guideline of the OWHC Cultural Tourism & Visitor Management Framework. 📚 The Charter is currently available in a total of 8 languages, with 4 additional ongoing translations (Portuguese, German, Japanese and Hindi) currently on the way! 🔴 In December 2024, an International Meeting on the ICOMOS International Charter for Cultural Heritage Tourism 2022 will take place in Baeza (Spain).
