It is always best to get your own first-hand impressions. Consequently, Mario Brandenburg, Parliamentary State Secretary to the German Federal Minister of Education and Research, visited ITER yesterday to get his own take of the international hydrogen fusion project in the south of France. The highlight of the visit was a tour of the ITER worksite with DG Pietro Barabaschi and Chief Scientist Alain Becoulet. #bigscience #climatechange #fusionenergy #ITER #scienceforsociety Pietro Barabaschi

ITER is an international, large-scale scientific collaboration intended to prove the viability of fusion as an energy source, and to collect data that will contribute substantially toward the design and operation of the subsequent first electricity-producing fusion power plants. To achieve this goal, seven Members (China, European Union, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States) have joined forces to build the ITER Tokamak: the world’s largest fusion device. The seven Members signed the ITER Agreement in 2006, and have agreed to share in every aspect of the project: science, engineering, procurement, financing, staffing, intellectual property, etc. The ITER Project is based in Saint-Paul Lez Durance, in the south of France, where the ITER facility is currently under construction.

Progress at ITER! Following the successful Final Design Review (FDR 3.0), serial production of key components for the superconducting coils' power supply system has begun at the Efremov Institute (JSC "NIIEFA", Russia). This includes the fast energy discharge system, control systems, protective devices, and more. Shipments continue, with up to 15 trailers of vital equipment expected at the ITER site by the end of 2024. The team is also collaborating globally on the design of ITER’s first wall, contributing expertise at international meetings in China and Japan. #ITER #FusionEnergy #ScientificCollaboration

The Institute for Plasma Research (#IPR) has successfully developed a 120 kW High-Power Amplifier (HPA) for heating fusion plasma in tokamaks using high-power RF waves. This indigenous breakthrough, built with Indian industry, includes all key components from the RF cavity to control systems. Characterization of the HPA has been completed up to the 60 MHz range and further tests are in progress. Next step: Delivering this HPA to ITER as an in-kind contribution. Stay tuned for more updates! #FusionEnergy #Innovation #PlasmaResearch #AtmanirbharBharat #NuclearFusion #ITER #IYNS #viksitbharat #MakeinIndia

From prototype to series production: green light for the ITER Divertor Inner Vertical Targets! @Fusion For Energy and Alsymex have signed a contract to manufacture 13 units after the real-scale prototype passed rigorous testing. These targets, positioned at the bottom of the ITER device, will face the plasma and endure heat loads up to 2000ºC, thanks to a tungsten armor and cooling pipes beneath. Unprecedented in scale and specs, the prototype withstood intense high-flux tests with hot electrons. 📸 by #Alsymex #ITER #FusionEnergy #Innovation #Engineering #CleanEnergy #Fusionforfuture

A team of specialists at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics has developed and launched a groundbreaking test facility to study the fatigue failure of materials under rapid repetitive thermal loads. This innovation is crucial for ITER, as it will reveal how materials for the first wall of the tokamak reactor withstand extreme temperatures and powerful plasma pulses. Key Highlights: Rapid Testing: Up to 10 million heating pulses in two weeks, compared to a year with other installations. Material Research: Focus on tungsten and special ceramics for the ITER project. Innovative Design: Electron beam simulates thermal shocks with a unique annular cathode unit. The facility's effectiveness has been confirmed after one million shots. Exciting research on tungsten and other materials is coming up. Stay tuned for more updates as we push the boundaries of nuclear physics and material science! #Fusion #Physics #ITER #MaterialScience #Innovation #ScientificResearch
