Reducing poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence.
À propos
The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) was established in 2003 as a research center at the Economics Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since then, it has grown into a global network of researchers who conduct randomized evaluations to test and improve the effectiveness of programs and policies aimed at reducing poverty. Our mission is to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. We do this through research, policy outreach, and training across seven regional offices worldwide.

J-PAL was at the heart of the action during #UNGA79 and #NewYorkClimateWeek, driving forward vital conversations on #AI, #climate, and #education. Read our key takeaways ⬇️ 📚 We started off with dynamic discussions at a UNICEF roundtable on the future of foundational literacy and numeracy programs alongside UNICEF’s Pia Rebello Britto, where J-PAL affiliated researchers Sule Alan and Tahir Andrabi were joined by Benjamin Piper (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), Luis Benveniste (The World Bank), and J-PAL’s Deputy Executive Director John Floretta. Together, they emphasized the power of buy-in from teachers and administrators when rolling out new edtech and structured pedagogy methods. 🌱 At the UNGA Science Summit, we joined forces with Development Innovation Lab, UN Convention to Combat Desertification, The Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND), and BADEA - Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, alongside leading researchers, to explore cutting-edge, scalable innovations to combat desertification and boost agricultural resilience. From rainwater harvesting to village input fairs, experts showcased evidence-backed solutions to tackle the growing threat of land degradation, with research supported by J-PAL’s King Climate Action Initiative #KCAI and J-PAL and the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA)'s Agricultural Technology Adoption Initiative. 📈 Our climate investments event, led by J-PAL’s Corporate Impact and Sustainability team and with support from Community Jameel, spotlighted the role of data-driven strategies in private-sector climate action. In a conversation moderated by Shawn Cole, we were joined by Maya Chorengel (TPG), Kartick K. (King Philanthropies), and Robert Metcalfe to uncover the different ways evidence can be used to advance climate investments. 💻 Finally, Iqbal Dhaliwal, our Global Executive Director, joined the Mastercard Foundation's Center for Inclusive Growth at the Impact Data Summit to discuss the future of data and AI for social impact, bringing an essential evaluation mindset to the application of innovative technologies for social good. 🌐 Beyond these anchor events, we had a dozen staff members on the ground in NYC all week, attending learning events and taking meetings with philanthropic, policy, and government partners. All in all, our time at #UNGA79 emphasized the importance of collaboration in applying rigorous research to create impact and accelerate progress toward global sustainability and education goals. 👋 Subscribe to our newsletter to keep up with the latest J-PAL updates: https://lnkd.in/dzAgB6f3
