Until a few days ago, I was sure that next week I would be celebrating closing Hexa Scale’s first deal. Well, that won’t happen. Sudden changes to the business made our operation much riskier, and the realization that we would have to pull out came as a huge blow. But like always in entrepreneurship, the setbacks offer the best opportunities, and we learned quite a few lessons: 🎯 Vertical software is an amazing match for Hexa Scale. More on that in a future post. 💵 Hexa Scale thesis resonates extremely well with investors. VC is attracting less capital, and big PE isn’t in the best shape either, but our transformation thesis VC x PE has tremendous investor traction. 🤠 Lots of great entrepreneurs are ready to become late co-founders and jump on board. 🧘♂️ Until it’s done it’s never done. Even if you know that a deal is never done until closed, even if you’ve already lived it multiple times, it’s still a huge pain. We have to manage our expectations. 🤓 Keep it simple. And wooh, that’s hard. Deal-making is complex by nature, especially M&A. It's easy to over-engineer solutions, focusing on avoiding edge cases and optimizing every scenario. Work hard to keep it simple. Our success depends on how fast we can learn, but deal-making has long cycles. It takes multiple months to do a deal, and multiple years to see your impact. It reminds me of hardware vs. software: iterating fast in hardware is by design more challenging. The obvious solution: we have to be more ambitious, do many more deals in parallel, and ultimately grow our operations accordingly.
