[Green Fact] Switching to bio-based chemicals thanks to biomass & alternative feedstocks 🏭 The #chemical sector currently releases approx. 60 million tons of CO2 eq. each year in the EU. Switching to renewable feedstocks in chemical production is a promising solution to replace the current fossil-based feedstocks. Alternative feedstocks would contribute to climate neutrality, a circular #bioeconomy, and reducing pollution and toxicity – such as: ✅ Crop and forestry residues ✅ Organic waste, as municipal and agro-industrial waste ✅ Macro- and microalgae ✅ Carbon dioxide, via carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies As Viviane Serpa Muller presented earlier this year at the International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo, the chemicals industry can benefit from the #biorefinery concept integrated with biofuel production, drawing upon the synergies between both sectors. The integration with large-scale #biofuel production provides the cascade use of biomass, enables circularity, and adds value to biomass. #GreenFact Sources: European Environment Agency, Petrochemicals Europe (Cefic), European Commission
