UNEP's IMEO collects and integrates methane emissions data to target ambitious emissions reductions and track progress.

À propos

Reducing methane emissions is the single fastest way to slow global warming as we decarbonize, but the world needs empirical data to enable climate action at scale. UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is harnessing a methane data revolution by putting open, reliable, and actionable data directly into the hands of individuals with the power to reduce emissions. Methane data is critical for closing the emissions gap by focusing mitigation efforts and tracking progress over time. Situated at the centre of the world’s methane data ecosystem, IMEO collects, synthesizes, and publishes data from its Methane Science Studies; from satellites via the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS); through rigorous industry reporting via the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0); and from national emissions inventories. IMEO is a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge – which is a global effort by over 150 countries, led by the EU and US, to reduce global methane emissions 30 per cent by 2030 from 2020 levels.

  • 👏 To meet the world's methane goals, national oil companies' (NOCs) participation is vital – and a growing number of NOCs have joined OGMP 2.0. A new report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) highlights the resources available to NOCs, which represent about half the world's oil and gas, to translate ambition into action. The UN Environment Programme's Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 is a powerful framework for companies in the sector to accelerate their methane journey via credible data. 🔺 By joining, companies adopt a comprehensive, measurement-based reporting framework that increases accuracy and transparency in their reported methane emissions. 🔺 OGMP 2.0 member companies commit to reporting annually on their methane emissions from operated and non-operated assets using the most accurate methods and science-based measurement frameworks, as opposed to using generic emission factors. 📰 The report also highlights the growing interest from investors who recognize OGMP 2.0 Gold Standard Pathway and Gold Standard Reporting as a powerful performance indicator.   ➡️ This transparency is providing confidence to regulators, investors, and the general public that OGMP 2.0 members manage emissions responsibly and progress toward announced targets to #CutMethane. • 🚀 The world is experiencing a methane data revolution with the potential to supercharge climate action, in part thanks to a new generation of satellites heading to orbit.   One is MethaneSAT, which flew to space this year and is preparing to beam down data which will play a critical role – alongside data from over a dozen other satellites – accelerating efforts to #CutMethane.   Millie Chu Baird, Mission Impact Lead for MethaneSAT, shares the story of how an audacious idea turned into this groundbreaking science effort.   “With MethaneSAT in space and the power of people on Earth, let's do everything we can, as quickly as we can, to slow the rate of global warming”   🌍 The UN Environment Programme is already translating satellite data into climate action via the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), which scans the globe for emissions and notifies governments and companies so they can take action.   🔎 As new data from missions like MethaneSAT and Carbon Mapper becomes available, it will help expand transparency and accountability – including through initiatives like UNEP's MARS. https://lnkd.in/d-WmfkUw

  • 📰 Methane warms the planet over 80 times faster than CO2 ➡️ As this warming worsens disasters like wildfires and heat waves, the fight to #CutMethane becomes critical. 🟢 Curbing methane emissions is the single fastest way to slow global warming as we decarbonize. But the world needs credible data to: 🔺Understand where emissions come from and where opportunities exist to take mitigation action. 🔺Track progress and understand how emissions are changing over time by providing transparency and accountability at scale. 📊 IMEO provides open, reliable, and actionable data to individuals with the power to take action on methane. This includes efforts to drive progress and accountability across the oil and gas industry, where some of the most cost-effective and readily available reductions can be achieved. Through its OGMP 2.0, the only comprehensive, measurement-based reporting framework for the sector, IMEO is scaling transparency to drive down emissions 👏. 🤝 Complementing these efforts is the UNEP-convened Climate & Clean Air Coalition, which helps build capacity and drive policy change to reduce emissions. • 🚨 From The Guardian: The world experienced 12 straight months with temperatures 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. ➡️ This temperature rise makes extreme weather and catastrophic climate events more likely. 💡Joining forces to #CutMethane is the fastest way to tackle climate change in the short term and move towards a net-zero world. Why? Because methane is a very powerful but short-lived greenhouse gas, meaning that mitigation efforts result in immediate progress to slow warming. In fact, human-caused methane emissions drive roughly 30% of current warming. That's why IMEO exists: to provide open, reliable, and actionable data to those who can reduce methane emissions.
