🌳 Discover our new reforestation project in the North of Rio! This very promising project is one of the first examples of combining large-scale reforestation technology with the skills of local actors. To achieve the goal of 35% forest carbon absorption capacity by 2030 (IPCC), 8️⃣0️⃣ million hectares of new forests would need to be planted each year. However, only 8️⃣ million hectares are reforested annually (UN). To accelerate planting, MORFO’s drone technique must be supported by the knowledge and work of local populations. That's why @MORFO work with Instituto Terra de Preservação Ambiental - ITPA. In this 50-hectare project, 75% of the area is replanted by drones and 25% with the help of local populations who are already working there. ITPA provides MORFO with knowledge of the Mata Atlantica biome, access to a nursery for manual planting, and local workers to carry out the planting. This Brazilian organization has more than 20 years of experience in tree planting and has restored one million hectares of the degraded Atlantic forest. 💙 A new forest ecosystem is growing in the Amazon rainforest! Here’s an update on one of our projects that started two years ago. When we arrived at this former alluvial gold mine in French Guiana, the land was nearly bare. We knew we had to act quickly. MORFO was still a young company with less experience, but we gave it our all. The results? - Vegetation cover increased from 0% to 74%, an impressive recovery for this type of land. - The plants now range from 30 cm for the smallest to over 3 meters for the tallest. - The presence of 1,000 trees per hectare (1 hectare = 1 large football field) is expected to be reached in most areas, an ideal density for degraded ecosystem restoration. - For now, out of the 11 different species we planted in 2022, 9 have successfully taken root. What’s next? We’ll continue planting where needed and closely monitoring to ensure the ecosystem thrives. The forest is coming back! Have you ever wondered WHY the largest forest in the world got this name? ⛵️ ORIGIN: The Amazon got its name in the 16th century, during the expedition of the Spanish explorer Francisco de Orellana. 🚩 INDIGENOUS RESISTANCE: While navigating the river that runs through the forest, Orellana and his crew encountered resistance from indigenous tribes. Among the warriors were women fighting alongside men, which deeply impressed Orellana. 🛡️ THE LEGEND OF THE AMAZONS: Inspired by Greek mythology, Orellana associated these women with the legendary Amazons: - A group of warrior women who, according to the stories, lived in a society governed by women and were famous for their courage and skill with weapons.
