This October, the PLACE team was proud to attend 🗳️ “Democracy Beyond Elections: Enhancing the Democratic Participation of EU Citizens with Migration and Refugee Background." This day-long event in Brussels 🇧🇪 was organized as part of the DARE – Democratic Action of Refugees in Europe project, which is supported by alda* - European Association for Local Democracy and funded by the European Union.🇪🇺 Here are some key highlights of the day! In the morning, we had the privilege of meeting MEP Michael McNamara (Renew Europe) 🤝 , where we discussed the importance of enhancing the democratic participation of EU citizens with migration and refugee backgrounds. In the afternoon, we visited the Parliamentarium 🏛️ , and then the United Nations Human Rights Office (Regional Office for Europe) 🌍 . There, we had an insightful conversation with Mila Paspalanova, Anti-Racial Discrimination Advisor, on combating racial discrimination and promoting inclusion. And last but not least, this was the opportunity to showcase a new policy paper, named "Enhancing the Democratic Participation of Citizens with Migration and Refugee Background." 📄 It stresses that true democratic participation goes beyond elections > it includes public consultations, community organizing, and advocacy to ensure the voices of migrants and refugees are heard. The paper even includes the role of PLACE Network and the Resilient Cities Program in fostering inclusive civic engagement in its good practices section.🌐 📸 Check out our photos and read the policy paper here! https://lnkd.in/etXmPY4v Imtinen Abidi Shawgi Ahmed Selma Rassoul Ismail Alkhateeb #Vote 🗳️ #DemocraticParticipation #MigrantVoices #PLACENetwork #EUisU

Welcome to PLACE! - A European project that aims to show how #migration is a source of #innovation for host societies
À propos
What if we started optimizing the opportunities that #Migration brings? Opportunities for economic growth, for innovative solutions, for more resilient societies. The « what if » question lies at the core of any experiment- be it scientific, social or artistic. In 2016 we started applying it to the refugee situation in Europe, looking to challenge a media-fed paradigm mostly considering refugees as an issue and a threat. We went to the field, sourcing newcomer talent and crafting pop-up environments in which migrants and refugees could come up with new solutions. Coming from the world of innovation, PLACE uses an evidence-based approach and a rigorous innovation process, to try out what works in boosting migrant-led innovation. The project has grown its impact quickly through the far-reaching PLACE collective, made up of public actors, the private sector, cultural actors, universities, and other civil society initiatives. Our team thrives in intercultural environments. All having lived a recent story of migration, we come from different countries, cultures, sectors. Diversity is our strength - we bring our different stories and experiences to the table to make #migrantledinnovation bring renewal and growth to Europe.

PLACE's Advisory Board has met once again, this time in our brand-new office space! During this enlightening gathering, we had the opportunity to discuss PLACE's latest endeavors, the strategic development of our current programs and partnerships with the local governments in France and beyond. As an organization, it is essential to have a support system that not only understands and knows PLACE Network inside out but is also deeply passionate about it. 💖 Their insights and guidance are instrumental in keeping the project not only on track but constantly pushing it towards new horizons. Our board members serve as more than advisors; they are connectors to other sectors, helping us bridge gaps and collaborate in ways that expand our reach and impact. They act as coaches, ensuring that our focus remains sharp and aligned with our mission, while also providing a safe space for innovative ideas and future projects to be tested and refined. 🚀 It’s this level of engagement, expertise, and dedication that allows PLACE Network to grow, adapt, and continually break new ground. Migration plays a crucial role in driving economic growth and supporting public services. In OECD countries, people with migration backgrounds consistently contribute more in taxes and social contributions than they receive in benefits like healthcare, education, and social welfare. In 2017, their contributions funded $547 billion in public goods, including defence and infrastructure. Even during the challenges of 2020, when global migration dropped by over 30% due to the COVID-19 pandemic, migrants remained essential to labour markets, particularly in key sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and hospitality. In fact, studies show that closing the employment gap between migrants and native-born workers could boost national economies by up to one-third of a percent of GDP. Unlocking the potential of people with migration backgrounds, improving access to quality jobs, and enhancing housing mobility are key strategies that can further amplify their positive impact. Migration isn't just about people moving—it's about building stronger, more resilient economies and societies for everyone. 🌱🤝 Read more about the OECD - OCDE report here: https://lnkd.in/ezZar5Vg #PLACENetwork #OECD #MigrantTalent #MigrationMatters #EconomicGrowth #InclusiveEconomies #GlobalImpact #DiversityAndInclusion #FutureOfWork
