Yesterday's AI for Education's webinar, "Building Student AI Literacy," highlighted the critical importance of preparing students for a world increasingly shaped by AI. And for those participating in Common Sense's Digital Citizenship Week, our approach aligns with the goal of promoting a healthy, balanced, and positive approach to media and tech use among young people. Here are some of the key highlights of my discussion with Corey Layne Crouch: The Need for AI Literacy Research indicates that more than half of high school students are already using GenAI tools and that students as young as 7 are interacting with GenAI in applications like Snapchat and Roblox with no guidance or training. Building AI literacy is imperative for their safety and future success. Moving beyond the "AI is for cheating" narrative: We need to reframe the conversation about AI use in education to focus on safe, ethical, and effective (SEE) use rather than just academic integrity concerns. How to "SEE" AI Literacy Our framework for AI Literacy is that users will know how to use GenAI: Safely: Understanding data privacy, security, and responsible use Effectively: Learning how to prompt (when age appropriate), how to evaluate outputs, and know when (and when not) to use AI tools Ethically: Understanding the broader ethical implications of AI like bias, deepfakes, misinformation, academic dishonesty, cognitive offload, climate impact, and ownership/originality Age-appropriate approaches: We emphasized the importance of modeling AI use for younger students and guided exploration for older students, always considering age restrictions on AI tools and getting permission from parents. As educators, we have a responsibility to integrate AI literacy into our curriculum, ensuring students are prepared for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce and Wolfspeed, Inc. have signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) to provide up to $750 million in proposed direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act. The proposed funding would support the construction of a new silicon carbide wafer manufacturing facility in Siler City, North Carolina, helping to secure a reliable domestic supply of the semiconductors that will underpin the future energy economy and AI boom. The proposed CHIPS investment is also expected to catalyze the company’s planned expansion of its device manufacturing facility in Marcy, New York. The projects together are estimated to create over 2,000 manufacturing jobs and 3,000 construction jobs and are part of the company’s previously announced more than $6 billion capacity expansion plan. Adobe is making a significant leap into generative AI video with the launch of its Firefly Video Model. This new technology, now integrated into Premiere Pro, introduces innovative tools for video editing. The Generative Extend tool is available in beta, allowing creators to extend footage by two seconds at the beginning or end, helping correct minor issues without reshooting. Clips can be generated in 720p or 1080p at 24 FPS, and the tool can also extend ambient sound effects by up to ten seconds, although it won’t work on dialogue or music. Additionally, Adobe is rolling out Text-to-Video and Image-to-Video tools in the Firefly web app as a limited public beta. These advancements position Adobe at the forefront of generative AI in video production, enhancing creativity and efficiency in content creation. Researchers at Georgia Tech have introduced Citadel, a new memory allocator designed to combat the long-standing Rowhammer vulnerability in DRAM. Rowhammer, which affects modern DRAM systems, allows attackers to manipulate data by repeatedly accessing adjacent memory rows. Citadel tackles the root cause—physical adjacency of DRAM rows—by creating isolated security domains in separate memory regions. Unlike hardware defenses, which are costly and slow to adopt, or software solutions that slow down performance, Citadel provides a low-cost, efficient fix with just 7.4% memory overhead and no performance loss. It’s deployable on both current and legacy systems, making it a flexible solution to prevent Rowhammer attacks.
