If you’ve ever seen a rocket launch, you’ve undoubtedly been struck by the tremendous noise it generates – even when you’re a couple kilometers away. Now imagine the satellite sitting on top of the launcher and how much noise it’s exposed to! Long before it gets to that point, at Thales Alenia Space we make sure that our satellites can withstand such an extreme acoustic environment. 📸 Team picture of Sentinel-1D in the Acoustic Chamber of Thales Alenia Space in Cannes. #sentinel #earthobservation #spaceforlife Thales/Leonardo/European Space Agency - ESA/European Commission/Copernicus ECMWF/Simonetta Cheli/Massimo C Comparini

#JUICE, the European Space Agency - ESA's Jupiter Moon's Explorer, will soon approach the Moon and Earth for an unprecedented flyby. It will be a very sensitive maneuver to bring the satellite on its way to Venus for the next flyby. Stay tuned to ESA's channels to follow Juice's path. Many engineers here on Earth have been working on its cutting-edge equipment before it embarks on its incredible trip across the solar system toward Jupiter. Indeed, Thales Alenia Space has been a major supplier, having developed and built important scientific and navigation units. Let's see which ones in detail🔍👇 - the Radar Sounder for Icy Moons Exploration (#RIME), the most important of the 10 instruments on board the JUICE spacecraft. This instrument is crucial to the success of the mission due to its ability to directly detect the internal structure of the icy layers. The University of Trento, which is responsible for the scientific aspects, is the interface to ESA through Principal Investigator Prof. Lorenzo #Bruzzone. The development was financed by the Italian Space Agency with some units provided by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. - the Ka-band Transponder (#KaT), a fundamental element of the 3GM (Gravity & Geophysics of Jupiter and Galilean Moons) instrument, of which Prof. Luciano #Less of the University of Rome is Principal Investigator and interface towards ESA, for analyses on the composition of the atmosphere and for the precision positioning of the satellite. The development was funded by the ASI and represents the technological and performance evolution of the MORE KaT, embarked on the BepiColombo mission. - the High Accuracy Accelerometer (#HAA) to detect the very low accelerations generated on the probe and ensure the accuracy of the measurements of the #3GM instrument. The development was co-funded by ASI and ESA and is the result of the adaptation for JUICE of the #ISA (Italian Spring Accelerometer) project embarked on the BepiColombo mission. - The Deep Space Transponder X-X-Ka (#DST), currently the state-of-the-art in navigation equipment for deep space missions, provides the ground-to-board link for sending and receiving remote controls and telemetry, and for the tracking functions required to control the satellite and thus the entire mission. The development was carried out through a contract with Antwerp Space. - the 2.54-metre diameter High Gain Antenna (#HGA), a key part of the navigation and transmission system, will operate in both the X and Ka bands, enabling communication with Earth, and will also be used by the 3GM instrument, helping to ensure its performance, thanks to its high stability #DestinationJupiter #Juice European Space Agency - ESA ARIANESPACE Agenzia Spaziale Italiana Centre National d'Études Spatiales Airbus Defence and Space Thales Leonardo Telespazio INAF - Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica UniTrento DISI Sapienza Università di Roma Luciano Iess Massimo C Comparini 📸 #esa

Since April, inside the Military environment of the Salto di Quirra Italian Defence Test and Training Range (PISQ), Sardinia (Italy), the Space Rider team of Thales Alenia Space has been engaged in an important drop-test campaign to qualify the deployment of the spacecraft parachutes. Space Rider is European Space Agency - ESA’s first reusable space transportation system that will serve as an uncrewed robotic laboratory, allowing technology demonstration and benefit microgravity research in pharmaceutics, biomedicine, biology and physical science. Across the past few weeks the drop-tests have involved the use of a test model of Space Rider with a weight distribution similar to the real 3000 kg reentry module. In order to test future vehicle capabilities, taking advantage of the undisputed skills of the Army Aviation (AVES), the test model is released from a CH47 helicopter at a height of 3.5 km, where drogue chutes are deployed to slow down the model to a safe speed of 12 km/h, enabling the extraction of the parafoils, which allows the spacecraft to be steered to a landing strip. During these tests, the teams tested and qualified the parachutes, parafoils, and control winches that automatically guide the spacecraft to a soft touchdown on Earth. The paragliders used are 10 times larger than those used by humans, measuring 27 meters in length and 10 meters in width, and are controlled from the ground to test the aerodynamics. The activities are carried out in Italy thanks to the virtuous synergy between industry and the Italian Defence, which has made its assets and the Salto di Quirra Testing Range available supporting the national effort to enhance Space capabilities and international collaboration in the sector. The tests will continue uninterrupted until this winter, at the end of which they will qualify the spacecraft’s entire mission, from flight to return to Earth and landing. The purpose of the RFC Test on a representative mockup of the ROSE-L Satellite is to validate the electromagnetic compatibility analysis between the on-board antennas 📡 and to finalize their accommodation. This is a crucial step in the finalization of the satellite design as a fundamental pre-requisite for the next Critical Design Review. The compatibility between the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) antenna - featuring a surface area of approximately 40 m2 😮 - and the GNSS receiver, both operating in the L-band, is of particular relevance to this test. We performed a complete in house RFC Test campaign and we are very proud also to provide a full range of testing services with teams acting through all the phases of a test campaign . ROSE-L is developed in the frame of the Copernicus Programme cofunded by ESA and the European Union. #ROSE-L #Copernicus
