🤖  New WAI Legal Insights article: “AI Sandboxes: Where Innovation Meets Regulation” Regulatory sandboxes (RS) have transformed over the past decade, starting with the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority initiative to encourage responsible innovation in finance. Now, these “controlled environments” allow regulators and tech innovators to test groundbreaking technologies, such as AI, blockchain, and IoT, within set boundaries to address regulatory gaps. In the latest article, Katerina Yordanova, lawyer and researcher from KU Leuven and imec, dives deep into the European Commission’s AI Act and its provisions for AI-specific sandboxes While AI regulatory sandboxes hold promise for safer innovation, the EU's approach presents key challenges, including: 🔸 Limited flexibility in EU regulations vs. global standards, impacting attractiveness for innovators  🔸 High setup costs and potential competition among sectors 🔸 A strict timeline, with Member States expected to establish or join an AI RS by August 2026 Katerina explores the delicate balance between fostering innovation and maintaining compliance, noting that RSs must be more than just a "checkbox exercise."
