- [Instructor] Explaining your position. In a negotiation, it's important to be able to explain your position clearly. The specific language you will use will depend, of course, on the specific context of your negotiation. However, there are some useful phrases to keep in mind for introducing your explanation. "Allow me to" or "let me provide a bit of background here." "Allow me to" is more formal, and "let me," more informal. Geraldine is the head of the communications department at a university. She is negotiating with the head of finance for additional funds for her department. She could say, "Allow me to provide a bit of background here. Our department's budget has been the same for the last three years. However, we saw a 35% increase in enrollments and communication majors last year, and we expect a similar increase for next year."
