- [Instructor] Doing your homework. When it comes to negotiations, preparation is key. The more you know going into the negotiation, the better you will be able to make your case during the discussions. So, what do you need to know and what should you try to learn before it's time to negotiate? You know your own goal, your BATNA and your bottom lines. You should do what you can to figure out the goal, BATNA, and bottom lines of the other party to the negotiation. They're unlikely to share this information with you directly, of course, so you'll need to find it by doing some research of your own. The types of information you might need to search for depend on the type of negotiation. If you're negotiating a vacation schedule at work, you may need to find out which colleagues have school aged children and who will, as a result, need to take a vacation when school is out, or maybe who has family that they regularly visit in other regions or countries that require traveling long…
