Proud to be part of the original design team back in 1994 and the more recent customisation for Saab. Two fantastic companies to work with.
Congratulations.
"More than a Mirage: UAE combat aircraft in China" (International Institute for Strategic Studies)
July 22, 2024 | Albert Vidal Ribé & Joseph Dempsey
"The United Arab Emirates (#UAE) Air Force and #China's People’s Liberation Army Air Force (#PLAAF) began Falcon Shield, their second exercise in China, on 10 July 2024. ... The joint air exercise was again being held in #Xinjiang province. ... Satellite imagery ... shows that #Hotan Airport in Xinjiang is being used. ... Deployments by the UAE (present) potential information-gathering opportunities ... to Beijing.
The 2023 and 2024 iterations of Falcon Shield have involved the UAE deploying at least six Dassault Mirage 2000-9DAD/EAD fighter ground-attack aircraft, supported by a single Airbus MRTT tanker/transport aircraft. Two Boeing C-17A Globemaster heavy transports were also briefly visible ... following the ... 2023 exercise, suggesting they were used for transporting supporting equipment and personnel. Falcon Shield 2024 included the addition of a temporary shelter often associated with ... #UAV operations."
"The presence of the Mirage 2000s raises the issue of Chinese access to Western military-aircraft. ... This type of aircraft is also operated by the #Taiwanese air force. Familiarisation with the Mirage 2000 and its performance and capabilities, as well as the possibility of dissimilar air-combat training, would be of value to the PLAAF."
"#Pakistan, China’s largest defence-export partner, now operates two front-line Chinese designs, the Chengdu JF-17 and the Chengdu J-10C. Islamabad’s airforce is a regular participant in international exercises, including Spears of Victory, held in #Saudi Arabia ... most recently (involving) #Bahrain, #France, #Greece, #Oman, #Pakistan, #Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the United Kingdom and the #US. ... Such exercises provide the opportunity for Western aircraft to be operated alongside Chinese combat aircraft."
"PLAAF airborne early warning (#AEW) aircraft could be used to monitor the exercise, potentially providing further insights into the ability of Chinese AEW radar to detect the Mirage 2000. ... The seeker performance and detection range of the (Chinese) PL-10 (CH-AA-9) imaging infrared short-range air-to-air missile could be tested during any dissimilar air-to-air combat exercises."
"The relationship between the UAE Air Force and the PLAAF and China’s defence aerospace sector has developed in recent years. ... Broader ties between the UAE and China have caused concern in Washington, notably over the UAE’s 2019 choice of ... Huawei to provide the country’s 5G digital-communications architecture. The decision derailed UAE–US discussions over the former’s planned acquisition of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II."
"Holding a joint exercise with the PLAAF in China is a stark way of underscoring to Washington the UAE’s level of independence, but so far it is an approach very few operators of US combat aircraft have taken."

Hi! Sharing another piece that was published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies earlier this week. This time, Joseph Dempsey and I examined the 🇦🇪 UAE Air Force's deployment in Xinjiang, on the occasion of the second edition of the 𝐹𝑎𝑙𝑐𝑜𝑛 𝑆ℎ𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 air exercise with 🇨🇳 China's PLA Air Force.
A few takeaways 👇
🔹 We found the 2024 edition of 𝐹𝑎𝑙𝑐𝑜𝑛 𝑆ℎ𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 is taking place in Hotan Airport, as happened last year. This had previously gone unreported, as far as we know.
🔹 The UAE has deployed at least 6 Dassault Mirage 2000 fighters, supported by an Airbus MRTT tanker/transport aircraft. Two C-17 heavy transports were briefly visible in 2023.
🔹 The Mirage 2000 is also operated by the Taiwanese air force. Familiarisation with its performance and capabilities would be of value to the PLAAF.
🔹 Being the host nation offers China the possibility of bringing other assets to bear to monitor the exercise, potentially providing useful insights of radar and seeker performance.
90 ans.

The Finnish Air Force retires HN-401, which a fleet leader of the F/A-18 Hornet fleet, today. The aircraft has been flown more than other F/A-18s during its 27+ years of service.
The Finnish Air Force's aircraft HN-401 flew its final flight on 26.4.2024 at the Finnish Air Force Commander's media event at the Satakunta Air Wing in Pirkkala.
In December 2021, the FAF took a decision to spend $9.4 billion on a deal to procure 64 F-35s from Lockheed Martin to replace the aging F/A-18 Hornets.
The first jets are set to arrive in 2025 with all 64 fifth-generation jets expected to land in Finland by 2030.

Aircraft also featured in my trip to Vietnam.
Including this C-130 (not 'J'ungle), bought to this location as part of the memorial park of the Cu Chi Tunnels, north of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).
The immense network of tunnels were originally started and used in the 1940s as part of the fight for independence from the French.
This aircraft was left behind by the US Air Force, following the Vietnam War, it's now surrounded by trees.
It's a visible reminder of a war that is still very much part of Vietnam's near past.
The Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules is one of the most important aircraft in aviation history.
Beginning in 1965, the C-130 Hercules with its four turbo-prop engines, and 15-ton payload, and its ability to rapidly offload palletised cargo, dominated airlift operations in Vietnam.
As ground combat increased, so did airlift requirements. C-130 aircraft and crews rotated into South Vietnam every few weeks from bases in the Philippines, Taiwan, Okinawa, and Japan.
55 C-130's were lost in Vietnam, as well as millions of lives.
This isn't a political post about the right and wrong of the US/Vietnam war.
More of a 'note to self' that military aviation/aircraft are a real deterrent, not just a hobby to watch and admire.

Giant on the city: C-17 Globemaster III
The C-17 Globemaster III is the most flexible cargo aircraft to enter the airlift force. The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. The aircraft can perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions and can transport litters and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations. The inherent flexibility and performance of the C-17 force improve the ability of the total airlift system to fulfill the worldwide air mobility requirements of the United States.
France's Rafale fighter jet is so popular its manufacturer can't keep up
France's Dassault Aviation may not be able to meet demand for its Rafale fighter jet. The Rafale has become popular with India and several Middle Eastern nations. It's a national fighter jet limited by French resources, an aviation expert argued. France's Rafale fighter has become so popular that the manufacturer may not be able to meet demand, according to a British think...
