Source photo site SCMDOJO

The conclusion of 2023 definitely highlights the significant role that logistics is playing in Mexico's Nearshoring boom. Intense competition among carriers is observed as they fiercely compete for dominance in the escalating transportation of goods between Mexico and the U.S., and that includes adding intermodal services. The competition was triggered by the merger of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern into CPKC, creating the first single-line railroad spanning the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Various companies, including CPKC, Union Pacific Railroad, CN, and Grupo México Transportes, have launched competing intermodal services. BNSF Railway has recently entered the competition in partnership with J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. Together, they plan to launch a new U.S.-Mexico intermodal service on January 1, promising faster shipping speeds. The service will operate between major Mexican markets and the U.S. and will be one day faster than existing routes, with an alternative route through El Paso, Texas. It looks like we will keep seeing more collaborative efforts and innovations among carriers to shape the future of cross-border transportation in the U.S. and Mexico.
