Toutes nos félicitations, Madagascar pour la publication de votre premier rapport FiTI. Il est vrai que des lacunes ont été trouvées après analyse principalement certains éléments considérés comme important pour la transaparence, mais l'effort est a louer. L'accès à l'information notamment sur les accords de pêche reste difficile et cela n'est pas seulement pour Madagascar mais tel est le cas pour d'autres pays dans le golfe de Guinée. Pour les autres pays (Maroc, Guinée, Guinée Bissau) qui envisagent rejoindre la FiTI, vous savez maintenant les points sur lesquels il faudra mettre l'accent. #FiTI #transparence #accords #pêche

The DFO’s recent decision to close the 2024 elver fishery due to sustainability concerns and illegal activities has intensified the conversation around better management practices. Poaching incidents and eel seizures highlight the need for more effective oversight in our fisheries. Looking to Maine’s approach, where traceability has led to improved management, we see potential for similar progress in Canada. Such digital tools could offer a way forward, enhancing transparency and ensuring the sustainability of the elver fishery. We believe in supporting responsible fishing practices through the use of digital logbooks and traceability. These tools can help protect Canadian industry and the livelihoods of commercial fishermen. ___ La décision du MPO de fermer la pêche à la civelle en raison des préoccupations quant à la durabilité et au grand nombre d’activités illégales, a relancé le débat sur les meilleures pratiques à adopter. Le braconnage et la saisie d’anguilles soulignent la nécessité d’une surveillance plus stricte de nos pêcheries. L’approche adoptée dans le Maine, où la traçabilité a permis d’améliorer la gestion, ouvre la voie à des progrès semblables au Canada. Ces outils numériques pourraient servir à améliorer la transparence et la durabilité de la pêche à la civelle. « Des études antérieures ont montré que les zones entièrement protégées, c'est-à-dire les Aires Marines Protégées (AMP) où toute pêche est interdite, peuvent être bénéfiques pour les requins de récif. Notre étude ajoute un nouvel élément : les nations peuvent renforcer encore ces avantages", a déclaré le Dr Jordan Goetze, auteur principal de l'étude et chercheur associé à l'université Curtin. « Ils peuvent le faire en appliquant des restrictions sur les engins de pêche destructeurs tels que les palangres et les filets maillants ou en limitant les captures de requins en dehors des zones protégées. Ces mesures réduisent la mortalité des requins dans l'ensemble du pays et renforcent l'effet des zones entièrement protégées. [...] De nombreux pays sont actuellement en train d'étendre leurs zones protégées dans le cadre de l'initiative mondiale 30 x 30, qui vise à protéger 30 % de nos océans d'ici à 2030 », a déclaré le Dr Chapman. « Cette étude fournit des conseils sur la façon dont les nations peuvent étendre leurs zones protégées de manière à bénéficier à ces requins de récifs importants d'un point de vue écologique, culturel et économique. Elle souligne également que ces efforts d'expansion des zones protégées doivent s'accompagner d'efforts nationaux de gestion de la pêche afin de garantir la conservation du plus grand nombre possible d'espèces de requins. »

*The Importance of Small-Scale Fisheries* 🌊 The small scale fishers also referred to artisanal fishers are usually traditional fisheries mostly fishing households which use mostly small boats, with relatively little resources to make short daily trips to find fish either for consumption or local sales within their communities and its environs. This definition doesn’t really capture the whole definition of small scale fishers but I believe it has done its best to elaborate on what we term as small scale fishers. In Kenya particular it started off as small fishermen using curved mangrove tree for daily short trips, and over the years it has seen fishermen build fiber boats installed with engines that can get them little further than the wooden curved boats would do. In some communities they even moved from using nets to trolling, handling and longline for bigger pelagic and reef species. Fishermen are the immediate protectors of the ocean that is between the ocean and most other stakeholder finding livelihoods from the ocean i.e. the dealers, the mama Karanga, the small seafood shops in small cities and the BMU together with the county with the small levies collected per Kg of fish sold. In cases where the fish is exported then fishermen end up supporting millions of people employed across the value chain until the fish get to the table, which now finally provide nutrition value to the final consumer. Theirs is a rich preserved tradition in terms of fishing techniques, seasonal patterns, tide and tidal movements, fishing grounds, and cultural practices passed on from centuries ago down from one generation to the other that’s of value to the decision and typed of fishing methods being deployed currently. Though some fishing habits might be detrimental to the environment. Artisanal fishers are more sustainable and when empowered to go little offshore with the right gears mostly line fishing, can produce very high quality seafood products that can help them access the better market and get rewarded for their conservation incentive. Their fishing methods are generally low impact kind that can help reserve the health of the ocean and the fish stocks at large and also greatly minimize by catch that happens with bigger scale fishers. Small scale fishers foster community resilience in time of crisis and come together in solidarity against the weather storms, shared resources within their communities, and rebuild livelihoods thus fostering strong bonds with coastal communities I am particularly very glad working with Kumbatia Seafood, as we understand the importance of small scale fishers and to us our fishermen are our kings and queens, they are our ultimate pride and joy, the not only are wonderful to work with but also embrace environmental conservation and top-notch fishery skills that produce nothing but world class seafood. #smallscalefishers #kumbatiaseafood #whyiloveworkingwithSSF #SSF #communityrelations #fisheries #marinelife #marineresources

The octopus fishers protecting Portugal's largest reef On one of Portugal's most well-trodden coastlines, communities are working to preserve marine life and ensure vital food sources – such as octopus – are available long into the future. Armação de Pêra, a former fishing village turned resort town in the Algarve on Portugal's southern coastline, is all but deserted in winter. In the lull before summer, the wide sandy bay is empty, the cobbled streets are clear and the restaurants are serving regulars. But in only a few months time, the sea will bustle with boatloads of tour operators and fishermen in search of one of the region's most prized delicacies – octopus. Although sardines are usually synonymous with Portugal, the country consumes over 15,000 tonnes of octopus a year – the highest amount of any country in Europe. The common octopus is Portugal's most lucrative seafood product in value, with more than half of octopus landings occurring in the Algarve region. However, the journey from seafloor to plate is becoming increasingly fraught. Commercial fishing and tourism activities are putting pressure on the reef, and although the octopus trade is not officially endangered, there are concerns that if not protected catch may drop, as with sardines or tuna in the last two decades.  Across the Algarve, fishers are noticing that waters once teaming with marine life are thinning out. As their income and old way of life is jeopardised, fishers are taking steps to safeguard their resources for the future. "As a 10-year-old, I would go to the water in shorts with a speargun and I would easily catch fish to eat – spider crabs, congers, moray eels, we had everything here," says Miguel Rodrigues, the former president of Armação de Pêra's Fishermen's Association. At 45 years old, those days are a distant memory. Although fishers today use more sophisticated traps, as well as boats with engines, they are hauling up fewer octopus, says Rodrigues. "They have more fishing nets and more ways to catch fish, but there are no more fish," he says.   In the Algarve, fishers, including Rodrigues, are working to establish a new model, which will empower communities to protect these ocean species they depend on. Un événement en présence des GALPA de Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyane, Bretagne et des Îles Canaries. 💡 Mais qu'est-ce qu'un GALPA ? 🔹 Un territoire de projet : défini par une stratégie locale de développement durable, élaborée par les parties prenantes impliquées dans la valorisation économique de l'activité pêche et aquaculture. En Guadeloupe, chaque EPCI a créé un GALPA pour mettre en œuvre des stratégies adaptées à son territoire. 🔹 Une enveloppe FEAMPA dédiée : cette enveloppe permet de programmer des projets, portés par les acteurs locaux, répondant aux enjeux de la stratégie locale. Ce séminaire est une opportunité d'échange et de renforcement des capacités pour dynamiser le secteur de la pêche et de l'aquaculture en Guadeloupe. As their natural habitats disappear, these elusive creatures venture closer to human settlements, leading to tragic encounters. HOW MANIFESTED?: Fear drives these killings. Locals often mistake fishing cats for tigers and feel threatened. Social pressure and the desire for revenge for livestock losses, usually caused by other animals, further fuel these conflicts. AND THE USUAL HUMAN DEPREDATION: Fishing cats’ habitats are rapidly disappearing due to human activities. Asia lost 32% of its natural wetlands between 1970 and 2015, primarily due to agriculture, aquaculture, and palm oil plantations, Forbes reports. AND THE USUAL RECOMMENDED PABLUM: Conservationists emphasize the need for increased awareness and community involvement. Empowering local populations to protect these cats and their habitats can lead to sustainable conservation solutions. As Adhya [project leader] told Mongabay News, “The entire bigger vision is to link the healthy wetlands to fishing cat conservation and human sustenance.” YOUR LONE SOLUTION, IF YOU WILL KEEP IT: A reverence for life is an ethos of active human involvement in life, of serving as stewards of nature, of life, of all God's creatures. There is but one "sustainable conservation solution", and that is loving human superintendence of this shared planet. Let us replace a culture of death with a culture of life, killing creatures because they incommode us with protecting creatures simply becuase they exist, being the cause of the demise of God's creation with being the reason for its flowering and thriving.
