Opportunities for our people (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander) simply would not exist if it wasn’t for their fierce advocacy – wholeheartedly, thank you. There is a reason Aboriginal staff are far more likely to turnover or burnout. Being the visual creature I am- Imagine a huge pile of rotting apples (toxic workplace culture that you want to improve) then you place a shiny fresh & perfectly capable apple (Identified staff with valuable skills/insight) riiiigghhtttt at the bottom of the pile with the expectation that will fix the problem. 🍎🌳 We know what happens to that shiny apple don’t we? We know how hard that apple has to work to remain shiny & unaffected. We know how hard that shiny apple has to fight to be seen or heard or valued under the weight of the pile. We know that inevitably that apple will lose its shine over time & be negatively affected. That Apple will eventually wonder “Why am I even here?!” Employers take note: Taking your whole self to work is a huge ask. Meet us half way & improve your own cultural competency to share the cultural load ⚖️
Aboriginal employment is often misunderstood. Leaders who see Aboriginal employment as a race for recruitment are missing out. They wave job vacancies around, trying to attract attention, applications. Thinking that it’s about how many Aboriginal people they can place in the next 6 months. Others put resources into courses that lead to partial qualifications and work experience. Don’t get me wrong here. Courses and qualifications are important. They can change lives. But if you then place people into workplaces that aren't safe, how can you expect them to succeed? These motivated, skilled workers who have shown focus and courage. Faced with supervisors or coworkers who are disrespectful, suspicious, and unwelcoming. Everyday. What happens in these situations? It becomes harder and harder for us to show you what we can do. If you want Aboriginal staff - or applicants - you need to start working on your workplace. You need to be sure your workplace isn’t setting Aboriginal people up for failure. You need a safer and more respectful workplace for Aboriginal people. A workplace that welcomes and respects and supports Aboriginal people is a valuable asset. Don't let your hard work in attracting and selecting Aboriginal staff go to waste by losing them. Or harming them. Think of it as a long term investment, and not a short term gamble. I do this Aboriginal employment thing differently (explanation...) As you can tell, I'm a little bit obsessed with Aboriginal employment. Or more specifically helping not for profit leaders grow their Aboriginal workforce. And I think about it a little differently to most... WARNING: There's a chance I could get on my high horse about this. Most people have one or two go-to Aboriginal employment strategies: They put "Aboriginal people are encouraged to apply" in their job ads (and wonder why it's not working). Or, if it's an 'identified' role, they call and email every Aboriginal person they know to ask if they know anyone who can do the job. Ummm, the first is simply not going to work. And, the second sounds like A LOT of work. There's an easier way. BUT - we dont have time for that today, so I'll drip you some posts over the next few days/weeks to show you my approach. Watch out for it, the first line will be 'If Aboriginal employment is NOT about hustle and hope...?'.
