🌟We’re pleased to share our recent publication, "Angle-corrected GPR Hyperbolic Fitting Models for Improved Parameter Estimation", by our team (wenchao he and Wallace W.L. Lai) in the journal Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology. GPR is a widely used non-destructive method for detecting subsurface cylindrical objects like pipes, cables, and tree roots. Traditional methods often assume the GPR survey line is perpendicular to the target, which can lead to significant errors in real-world scenarios. Our study introduces a novel method that includes an angle correction index in the hyperbola fitting model, allowing for simultaneous estimation of the target's orientation, burial depth, and wave velocity. This enhanced model, solved using a hybrid of Multi-Verse Optimizer and Gradient Descent algorithms, is validated through both simulations and field experiments📈💡. The findings indicate that incorporating angle correction can significantly improve the accuracy of parameter estimation, providing valuable insights for better grid measurement design in GPR applications. Our #magnetotelluric study about the #Corbetti volcano-hosted #geothermal system led by my former doctoral student Luise Dambly is now published. The Corbetti geothermal prospect in the #Ethiopian Rift Valley is one of several places in the region considered to be suitable for #sustainable electricity generation. We analyzed #magnetotelluric data to obtain a 3-D #subsurface electrical conductivity model of the volcano's #magmatic and #hydrothermal systems using #geophysical modelling tools developed by Dr. Alexander Grayver. The model, visualized in the animation below, provides a highly detailed 3-D image of Corbetti's coupled magmatic and hydrothermal systems. Our interpretations agree with petrological equilibrium conditions on melt composition and reconcile with geodetic models for observed surface deformation and time-lapse gravity data measured previously. Another exciting showcase which demonstrates that modern #magnetotellurics should be considered a must-have #geophysical method for imaging #volcanoes and their associated #geothermal systems. Oddly enough #magnetotellurics is a largely disappearing discipline in academia. The work was the result of a fruitful collaboration between #ETHZurich,  #UniKöln and #ReykjavikGeothermal. 🆘🆘Let's talk about the Electromagnetic Method🆘🆘 #Electromagnetic survey methods aim to determine the distributions of the conductivity of soils and subsoils as a function of depth. Generally speaking, they include methods that use natural electromagnetic fields as a source (Audio and magnetotelluric method #AMT #MT) are #FDEM (Frequency Domain Electromagnetism) and controlled source methods, of which part of the #TDEM (Time Domain Electromagnetism) method. ALERTE AU CANULAR ! Cette vue d'artiste (?) est curieuse, pour ne pas dire plus. J'ai du mal à identifier le type de réacteur, de cycle et d'appareil propulsif. On a ainsi à la fois un "fuel salt" typique des réacteurs à sels fondus, mais aussi un "fuel core" typique des réacteurs à cœur solide. A moins qu'il ne s'agisse d'un réseau tubulaire dans lequel circule les sels fondus ? Ensuite on a deux générateurs de vapeur reliés entre eux par une pompe, mais pas de source froide. On nage là en pleine incohérence. On a ensuite une turbine reliée à l'échangeur via un tube serpentin. Ça fait vaguement penser à un cycle Brayton, mais il manque le compresseur et bien sûr la source froide. Et le cycle Brayton n'est pas forcément le plus adapté pour les navires. La suite est encore plus étonnante. La turbine entraîne un alternateur. Ce qui est classique. Mais en aucun cas on ne peut avoir l'alternateur relié par un arbre mécanique au moteur électrique. Et si on a un moteur électrique de propulsion, on n'a généralement pas besoin d'un réducteur. En fait, l'ensemble est un mixage informe de plusieurs types de propulsion nucléaires. Ce qui nous permet d'identifier "l'artiste", qui procède par assemblage de similitudes de formes sans rien comprendre au fonctionnement énergétique sous-jacent : c'est une Intelligence Artificielle qui a très probablement réalisé cette illustration. Et le Lloyd's Maritime Institute vient de chuter radicalement dans mon estime, en propageant des "bullshits" technologiques.

In polar regions, supplying liquid water is a real problem. This is because keeping the precious fluid liquid on its way from the source to the user involves a great deal of effort and is prone to problems. Swiss research groups from the ZHAW School of Engineering, ETH Zürich and Sirin Orbital Systems AG have now developed a method that would allow polar stations and Arctic communities to keep drinking water liquid even at the lowest temperatures and thus make it more transportable... using what is actually a simple principle.
