The hashtag 'immersive art' holds over 99 million views on TikTok and nearly half a million on Instagram, reflecting the widespread fascination. Outernet, drawing 1.5 million visitors monthly, is on track to reach 6.8 million this year, making it a potential UK hotspot within just one year of opening. Kusama's Infinity Mirrors exhibition has reached a staggering 330 million people across various platforms. Are we, or have we already, reached peak immersive art? Critics argue that immersive art is too common and dilutes the essence of true artistry. On the other hand, immersive art proponents, like Frameless' creative director Ryan 'Woody' Atwood, view it as a way to complement traditional galleries. Immersive events facilitate creative collaboration, merging different art forms. In settings like The Sphere in Las Vegas, music and experiential video art intertwine, offering a unique audience experience. There is no doubt that the rise of immersive institutions represents a transformative wave in the art world. These venues, attracting millions with their digital spectacles, are ushering in a new era of accessibility and engagement, particularly appealing to the digital-native younger generations. Yet, this shift towards spectacle-driven experiences raises critical questions about the nature of art consumption and the role of traditional artistic mediums. While immersive digital art forms offer unprecedented ways to experience creativity, they also risk fostering a passive viewer culture. This is a pivotal moment for the art community to reflect on the importance of maintaining a balance where art not only entertains but also deeply engages and challenges its audience. Museums and galleries have a unique opportunity to highlight more impactful content that encourages active engagement and reflection. In our postmodern world, where multimedia installations are becoming commonplace, it is crucial that we continue to champion traditional mediums. They provide crucial moments of introspection—a perceptual dialogue with the visual world that is as varied as the styles and techniques employed. These experiences are irreplaceable and deserve to be amplified alongside digital exhibitions. Take, for instance, Michelangelo’s "La Creazione di Adamo" painting in the Sistine Chapel ceiling. If paired with a choral rendition from the Coro della Cappella Musicale Pontificia Sistina, this iconic fresco delivers an immersive experience that no digital projection of Van Gogh’s impasto swirling stars can match. The depth and texture of brushstrokes, the play of light and shadow, all engage the viewer in a moment of connection that is both personal and universal. As we navigate this digital age, let us not forget the value of traditional art forms. They are not just relics of the past but are vital, living dialogues between the past and present. When the busiest shopping center in Europe debuts one of the biggest indoor convex 3D screens on the continent, they want to blow visitors away with immersive visuals to match. In April of 2024 Westfield Les 4 Temps did just that, with the help of Superbien. To activate visitors’ imaginations and to refresh their visual palettes between advertisements, Superbien envisioned a vibrant and lush aesthetic as the backdrop for a playful narrative starring a little gecko with a mischievous spirit. The 30-second Westfield Rise Digital Dream vignette will run indefinitely, punctuating branded content and promotions. The Superteam’s keen intuition to put the technology in the spotlight while expertly illustrating a relatable, though wordless, story made this aesthetically bold and warm-hearted dreamscape broadly appealing and a joy to watch. Relating the plucky and likable gecko to the audience helped to underscore the visual metaphor that the Westfield Les 4 Temps is just as magical as the fantastical jungle where our protagonist lives. Here’s to finding your own adventure and rollicking good times at Westfield Les 4 Temps - even if you can’t find any real, live geckos! Who is pushing the limits of immersive experience design? And who is simply pushing profits? In the world of immersive exhibitions, it seems the masses are jumping on the projection-mapped bandwagon featuring a parade of dead white guys (plus Frida), but at a cost that has some digital artists like Lucy Hardcastle and the mold-breaking, engineer/artists Studio Drift B.V. team raising their eyebrows and calling it a "money grab." These artists, who spend years creating mind-bending installations like concrete blocks that float and rain rooms where you don't get wet, aren't too thrilled about their hard work being "overshadowed" by these glorified Instagram backdrops. However, there's an argument to be made that these commercial experiences are drumming up public interest in art, especially digital art, which could indirectly shine a spotlight on the works of innovative creators like Hardcastle and DRIFT. And let's not forget, art has always been commercialized, whether by patrons in the past or the public now, and what's popular today might just be tomorrow's Van Gogh – ironically reminding us that time, not just ticket sales, will tell what's truly a masterpiece. https://lnkd.in/g7GZriiU
