Interesting discussions at the #AirportsInnovate2024 during the panel on the transformation of airports to Enerports—a pivotal shift towards integrating hydrogen infrastructure and energy innovation in the aviation sector. It was a pleasure to moderate this panel. Big thank you to the excellent panelists Ana Salazar López-Pedraza Peter Gallen Karsten Uhing and ACI EUROPE for the excellent organisation. Key takeaways from the panel: 💡 Hydrogen is no longer a distant dream. With ongoing tests and demonstrations, the potential for hydrogen-powered aviation is becoming tangible—a challenge that demands a complete rethink of airport Infrastructure. 🛫 Regional airports are leading the charge. In the short term, these hubs will play a critical role in trialing and implementing hydrogen technologies, paving the way for broader adoption. 🌱 Circular systems hold the key to efficiency. From production to storage and distribution, hydrogen must be integrated into a closed-loop model for maximum impact. 🤝 Collaboration and diversification are essential. There are Drones and there are drones. The challenge with drones today is they are either: - quadcopters - where most energy is lost to lift - fixed winged - where lift is enabled by forward movement which then requires energy to stay in motion. The commonality is a lighter payload because of using some energy for lift or movement. When we think #disasterresponse, the need for #selfreliance or being power-less is critical for the forward deployment to remain light and nimble. I therefore love the concept of #hybridairplane over drones especially when applied for either #pervasivepersistence coverage over a fixed area (tethered mode) or power-less #persistent constant altitude coverage over a wide area. #Levitation = lift - tranlates to more payload or less power per lift. Both #CONOPS serve different situations & purpose giving disaster operations alot of employment #flexibility. Drones remain important. When combined with this hybrid airplane option, the operations space of possibilities explode to meet time critical disaster response mission demands. As such, we are no longer limited by the #TyrannyoftheOR. Rather, we now possess the flexibility of options with the #GeniusoftheAND. You agree?! Thanks for sharing your vision with me.
